Whether or not he set out to create something different or the same is irrelevant.

To my ears the original Strings Of Life sounds vastly different to all the house tracks I know from the mid 80's and early 90's.

May's right I assume; he was the one pioneering a scene at a time when I was still pissing the bed, but my ears still tell me different.

To be quite honest, it sounds considerably more like house than a lot of classic house records do.

If you played Sleezy D's "I've Lost Control" to people who didn't know who made it and where it was made, I'll bet most of them today would call it techno.

At that point in time house pretty much was anything with a four to the floor kick, and it was anything from soulful vocals (Salsoul Orchestra) to a dirty 303 (Phuture - Acid Trax).

Or this... http://www.discogs.com/release/77643

So far ahead of its time.

I don't know, I guess it's all subtleties and hair splitting.

See, I would consider DJ Spen presents DJ Technics - Gabryelle as straight house music, even though it uses a very similar sound to the original Strings Of Life and has a similar structure, and I'd also consider the Strings Of Life remake by Soul Central very housey too.

I don't know why the original seems techno-ey to me, I think it's the more futuristic/spacey feel it has, coupled with less percussion, while I tend to see house as grittier and more rhythmic, using more traditional instruments where techno strives to sound synthesised.

Term "techno" become quite controversial...

mp3 stores like Beatport tend to label a pretty much everything as techno...and they are soo damn wrong, imo.

imo, techno is music produced generally in 2001-2004 by Adam Beyer, Joel Mull, Ben Sims, Samuel L Session, Bryan Zentz, Jel Ford, etc... before "minimal" was not so popular

Posted by Zild on Aug-18-2008 17:20:

Wow they only produced techno for 3 years?

Posted by mphreak on Aug-18-2008 17:23:

I am talking about that kind of sound which was very popular back then, and had its peak during those years. Of course it was produced years before, but, imho, never had that popularity like 2001-2004..

and what about guys like joey beltram and frankie bones...they were doing techno waaaay before 01?

Posted by mphreak on Aug-18-2008 17:28:

Jel Ford, Joel Mull, Ben Sims, Mauro Picotto, Umek, Valentino Kanzyani, Marco Bailey, Liebing, Dave Clarke, Technasia, Kowalski, Bas Mooy, Ben Long, Cristian Varela, etc...

Nop, for me it is tech house with "minimal" influnce.

Btw, as I said I haven't stated that there was no techno before 2000... There were plenty of great producers...Detroit trio, Beltram, Hawtin, Garnier...etc-

Posted by bigsnail on Aug-18-2008 17:30:

cool, just curious

Posted by Guest on Aug-18-2008 17:31:

I like where this is going. This topic is important.

Where do we draw the lines between genres? How important is genre-ization to the global economy, particularly in the eastern sectors which have grown exponentially in the past 2 decades?

Does all techno have to sound the same? Why does it have to be so definitive?

Posted by Zild on Aug-18-2008 17:37:

Techno is a lot more varied than the 2001-2004 sound would lead you to believe. Actually I think Techno as its own genre is bullshit. It is all House music if you ask me.

Posted by Guest on Aug-18-2008 17:38:

CAN YOU REALLY GO WRONG CALLING SOMETHING TECHNO?
