Perhaps. But you've pretty much got to be a slave to be in the Olympics. They train everyday, or at least 5 or 6 days a week by the time they're 10 or 11, probably younger.

The argument I read was that at 13 years of age, they maintain a distinct advantage in that their bones are not fully formed and are more pliable than a more fully developed 16 year old, and that they are therefore more flexible and able to do weird shit that should be reserved for the bedroom when they are of legal age. That and the fact that they weigh 50 pounds and fly through the air like hummingbirds. I think all gymnasts are freaky and ultimately turn into ogres when they turn 21 anyway.

This thread rings about a 7.3 on my LOLometer.

Seriously I'm still laughing. I have nothing tangible to respond with.

Posted by Kinezi on Aug-19-2008 18:57:

Look the point I want to make is China is not like North Korea.. go there.. I have been there,,, an I have been to most rural places in China cos of business resons.. and I have talked to many locals.. poor and rich.. and not person I met was unhappy or blaming govt an shit.. people like the policies. they are happy with the present system..

Its only people in west who make asusmptions that chinese are being oppressed.. put to slavery and shit like that.

Posted by Zild on Aug-19-2008 18:58:

I already said in my first post I don't fucking care. If they want to do things that way fine, and I was just making an argument since he asked why shouldn't 13 year olds be allowed to compete.

I got Chinese characters, but I haven't got a clue what they say because I don't know if the translate function I used in Word actually does anything. I think I said something like "eat shit, I don't know what that means." Then again, I don't think there is a direct Chinese translation for that.

Posted by Moongoose on Aug-19-2008 20:37:

If i may go back on topic for a bit. Sure those chinese girls look young , but i just saw that 16 year old american Shawn Johnson get a hug from one of the chinese girls who was congratulating her on the gold. And you know when you put them together, the chinese girls dont look all that younger if at all. The girl in question was just as tall and similarly built as the american girl.

Pretty much all olympic gymnasts train since about 5-6 years old. You can find youtube videos of our prior American gymnasts training at that age.

When you're just a peasant and the government says you have a knack for a certain skill, you're gonna train your ass off. The Chinese hurdles athlete has over 30 million U.S. dollars from sponsorship deals because he won gold in 2004. Do you know how much that can buy you in China? He's set for life.

Everybody here probably lives in a suburb or in a city, and likely has never seen what peasant living is like.

The Chinese-government-treats-their-citizens-like-shit is just American media China bashing. The current Communist leadership is actually scared of their citizens, they are doing all they can to improve quality of life so that they will NOT be overthrown. In comparison the U.S. Government seems to not particularly care about the average American citizen as much as corporate and special interests.

Posted by Zild on Aug-19-2008 21:24:

When the government says hey dirt poor peasants your daughter is great at this we are taking her of course they're going to say yes. Peasants in China barely scrape by so of course the family is going to force their child because they know it is their only way towards a life of luxury. Much better than making $1 an hour making cell phones in 12 hour shifts at the factory.

In the USA gymnastics is pretty much a sport for the middle class and higher.

Um, maybe because it's against the rules??

That and they've lied about their gymnasts' ages before, giving different dates at different competitions.

One would think you jokers would get past the China-bashing red herring and maybe think that NO country should be cheating!?

Yes, we get it.
It's China - get over it.
It's still not right.

We're talking about the damn rules, and I know it's "against the rules." WTF is your point?

Posted by mndeg on Aug-20-2008 03:36:

A lot of people are probably cheating at the moment, nothing you can do about it though. Doping detection always trails doping technology by quite a while.

Posted by mndeg on Aug-20-2008 04:08:

Americans cheating? haha
The official timekeeper of the event, Omega, was also the sponsor of Phelps.

Posted by Krypton on Aug-20-2008 04:26:

Let's get this one straight. Phelps never cheated. He doesn't control the time sensor pad thingy.

So its the IOC and decision comittee who cheated.. who pressurised them to do so? US or China? I think China and its government and people who is to be blamed..

I don't know who cheated, or even if there was cheating. But if there is a discrepancy, a cheat, it ain't Phelps. Phelps isn't the time keeper. Even he believed he was second before the scoreboard went up showing the .01 second time.

Posted by mndeg on Aug-20-2008 04:35:

An American corporation cheated. Corporate interests definitely beat out truth.

I'm commenting on your suggestion about letting 13 year olds compete - what the hell did you think I was talking about??
