I think its a combination of good marketing, great tracks, and great shows. Many people associate his name with trance and that is what gives him his superstar status. He also has a lot of mainstream success.

The reason why many people don't like him now is because of how mainstream he has become and how the trance newbies praise him as their demi god. I think aside from his producing going downhill he's just the same Tiesto.

Posted by junkproject on Aug-21-2008 18:54:

*Great brand name

i smell lots of bullshit in this post.

well, he was fuckin ace in 2002 and 2003. Thats probably the main reason he got a lot of recognition. Marketing etc has ensured that he has remained a huge name :-)

actually all of those who've won it hit their peak a couple of years before they won. Tiesto, PVD, Armin, Oakenfold even. It was after they got popular firstly with regular fans and then went on to 'connect' with the minorities, often through cheesy songs/actions that they they won.

Second that!

The best time to have seen tijs was the 6 hr shows he pulled in 2000 - 2003 in Dutch and UK based clubs on the SOLO Tours.

Wide variety of music, vinyl records, real mixing, and still the same "magik" feel... actually even picking through some older stuff and dropping those occassionally too. Those were real parties.

Since the TIC format arrived its been downhill. Arguably this is due to the popularity. Going to a Tiesto show these days is like spending a weeks work experience at kindergarten. If it wasnt for the sloppy attitude of the mass public who now turn up to see him, it would be much easier to give him further credit beyond '04. Unfortunately that just isnt the case. In the past 2 months alone, 3 club gigs have been stopped by the local police for overcrowding.

Some huge tracks early on in his careers.. Plus as others have said here, a great branding and marketing team.

The amount of my friends who came back from Ibiza and said to me 'We were gutted we didn't get to see Tiesto' I just replied 'Do you know what he plays??' They didnt have a clue, these were the typical people who think Hed Kandi is great music, they would of hated it with a passion...

He's the gateway for many newbs into trance.

Think of him what you will but people consistently come away from his parties having had a good time -- regardless of whether the set was the best or not. It's those kinds of experiences that keep him in high demand as well as being a magnet for those new to the scene (which imo is a good thing).

Don't hate on the guy for being successful.

Re: Why is Tiesto so big?

he got in early, was a driving force behind magik music, itwt and black hole, and was ahead of the game by a long way in respect to trance during 98/99. this is why he is so big. plus the fact that he has a great marketing team. tiesto plays at big trance events, which are few and far between by comparison to shit residents only tech house nights. Trance in 99 was the last dance music phenomenon to really be prominant in the charts which has meant it is one of the more popular and inclusive dance crowd drawing genres. when people that are out of the trance loop see 'tiesto' on a flyer, they remember liking trance in 99, and go to the event because they know the event will be done how a trance night should be. no expenses spared on lighting, sound and the big room things that are required for a trance night to be done properly.

does anyone go to these shit events? just seeing those nasty flyers makes me wanna hang myself. i bet the idea was thought up by a dumb over enthusiastic bimbo blonde who was going out with a house dj at the time. 'i wanna be a promoter!, i wanna be a promoter!'
