I just made myself sad.

And me a little more depressed. Just when i think i cant be disappointed by people any more, news like this come up and lover my opinion of the human race.

Nah, niggaz = plural, whereas nigga = singular.

Yes, absolutely. Schools that teach Ebonics should be burned to the ground for contributing to the dumbing down of a generation.

The worst part is that they're basically teaching it in communities where kids could really benefit from actually learning how to use the English language properly - teaching Ebonics seems like basically saying "Oh, you guys are never going to get it anyway - so let's just let you have your own language. You're never leaving the neighborhood anyway."

What a crock of shit.

+1. i freaking hate ebonics. proper english is the only way people will be able to succeed in the real world. those uneducated black people ruin it for all the rest of us. i hate the damn "oh you aren't like all the others" comments i've gotten through life. i also hate the n word and nobody should use it. black people should stop using the work totally and those who do are fucking idiots.

This is the type of reaction (except the "I hate the n word" thing as that just breeds more hate and racism, as it empowers the word) from black people makes me so fucking happy. I really enjoy it when a black person stands up and says these sorts of things.

i love black people.

I do like the Creole analogy - because we don't teach that in schools.

But yeah - why on earth people feel compelled (especially in urban areas where children might not be getting the best start anyway) to support teaching something that will have no real practical benefits is beyond me.

I don't need a dumber generation coming after me than the one I'm a part of.

And, unfortunately, this type of thought towards education spills over into just about every aspect, not just language.

hehe I honestly never knew what Creole was until a friend of mine went on his mission. He went to Florida and he was to speak Haitian Creole, which is French Creole. That was 2yrs ago.

And yeah I don't understand why on earth they would be compelled to teach an utterly useless tongue in which they learn how to sound like idiots.

A+

It's hard for African Peekskillians and Caucasian Appletonians to get along, traditionally.

Like the Montegue's and Capulet's.

i do try...it's because i'm african-america (truly because my family is actually in kenya mostly). my parents speak three languages as do most people in kenya so why the hell can't some americans speak one...english? they should feel embarrased by the fact that they can't communicate in their own language.

*that word doesn't empower me. i don't like it because people use it all the time then black people say well that's our word then put it into rap music bought by mostly white americans. ridiculous.

Well considering that, do you approve of the "African-American" label for blacks that have no idea of their origin?

i don't like the term african-american, never really have

I was thinking today that African American Vernacular English, though often looked down upon as being a "lazy" or "ignorant" way to verbally communicate, is actually a prime example of language efficiency.

That's how all vernacular languages work.

Phonology
- Conversion of "th" to "d" word-initially; [example: "This" becomes "Dis"... 25% word reduction]

Both "this" and "dis" have the same number of phonemes (namely, three).
quote:
- Words ending in "ing" drop the "g". [example: "You know nothing" to "You know nothin"]

Nothing new in the history of the English language.
quote:
- Homorganic final consonant clusters that share the same laryngeal settings are reduced. [example: "test" is pronounced "tes", but "sing" is still pronounced "sing" (or "sang").

Once again, that's nothing new in the history of the English language. As for laryngeal settings, it's nonsense.
quote:
- Deletion of final consonants, resulting in a glottal stop. [example: find may be pronounced fː]. "S" and "z" sounds are also often deleted.

I take it you've never met someone from Britain.

Deletion
- Phrase abbreviation / intermediate word removal. [example: "You know no other nigga" becomes "You know nann nigga". Source: Trick Daddy 1998. Some phrases have a more complex breakdown. For example, "You didn't have any idea?" can be reduced to "You didn't know?", to "You ain't know?", to "yee-know?". Another example is "You did not show up", which becomes "yeen-show". Source: La Chat 2001.]
- The copula "be" is often dropped. [examples: "You crazy! (You are crazy)", Where you at? (Where are you at?)]

Yet another common feature of vernacular languages. No one bothers to say every single phoneme unless they're bloody narcissists and/or are speaking a foreign language.

Aspect Marking
- The most distinguishing feature of Ebonics is the use of forms of "be" to mark aspect in verb phrases. In standard English, you would do this using adverbs such as "usually".

Examples:

He talkin' ==> He is currently talking.
He be talkin' ==> He talkin' frequently or habitually. (He be talkin' daily).
He stay workin' ==> He is always working.
He been had dat job ==> He has had that job for a long time and still has it.
He finna dance ==> He is preparing to begin dancing. ("Finna" is a contraction of "fixing to").

"Stay" is a form of the verb "to be"? Now that's efficiency!
quote:
Negation
- Use of "ain't" as a general negative indicator. In Ebonics, it can be used where am not, isn't, aren't, haven't, and hasn't would be used in SE, as well as in lieu of don't, doesn't, or didn't. [example: I ain't know that.]

And that makes language more efficient how?
quote:
General Slang
- The general slang terminology in AAVE is quite efficient in itself.

Examples:

Bling: "Jewelry which is very shiny"
Sling or "slang": General use term which refers to performing some kind of work. "Slinging rocks" means to sell crack-cocaine on the streets.

Additionally, new contractions are often made and used. "Imma" for "I'm going to".

Thoughts?

Funny post. Makes no sense whatsoever, though
