I have a cat that does the same thing. She's old, and lonely for cat company for sure. Does the same thing yours does. No one can figure it out.

Mine does it when it hears another cat outside the window without seeing it. They can hear them and smell them when we can't, and she's calling out her territory.

I'm gonna have to kill some kids in my neighborhood soon... I sorta 'share custody/ hijacked' the neighbor's cat, Clifford, and today Graham said someone spray painted his ears, tail & back blue, and poor Cliffy was not happy....
