I agree with this statement.
What's not to love about Hawtin?
He is definitely up there in my top DJ's and I don't think I have seen a bad set by him in all the times I have seen him.

spastik, minus orange are some pretty 'epic' (shudder, I hate that term) tracks, then for more recent stuff - 24hr crack in your bass, Audion - mouth 2 mouth (even though I rather dislike that one). Although, we could sit around and split hairs over 'are these techno? are these minimal? what is minimal techno' and get into a circular wank-fest.
However, I'd say Richie is pretty ontop of things right now. Not all of his sets knock my socks off, however I do have a great deal of respect for him and he's one of my favorite artists / producers. As a DJ he can be pretty hit and miss - but when he's on, its nothing short of magical at times. Some really mind-bending stuff.
haven't seen him live lately so can't really give any #1 praise.
i doubted techno would become so huge and its masters like hawtin that have paved the way for whats going on today.
Ritchie booth antics ftw
we had a whole thread deticated to this lol
( if someone has the time to find the link that be awesome )
Richie is not a DJ.

I'm biased because he's my favourite DJ, but he is my favourite for a reason. I've seen him more than 15 times, and in 5 different countries lol. I remember some of my first times seeing him:
1. At Roxy Blu as Plastikman for his Closer CD release party in 2003 or 2004 - some of the most warped, fucked up music I've ever heard to date. It was my first time hearing anything minimal too. He was so ahead of his time playing there. Most people in the room looked like they were about to run out of the club scared. Take a listen to some of the tracks on the CD to get an idea of what kind of tunes were played that night
My favourite from the CD:
Plastikman - Disconnect
2. At System Soundbar in January of 2004. I remember the last time I had seen him he played really horribly. He started off the same way on this night with very go-nowhere, boring minimal techno. The place was absolutely packed too. The most packed I had ever seen System. All my friends left because it was too packed, but I opted to stay. Best decision ever. Standing there by myself, looking at the DJ booth, lit only with haunting red lights, in a very dark room, Richie all of a sudden drops Technasia - Acid Storm
Given how anxious the crowd was for it, coupled with Richie's looping, he had the place going absolutely bonkers at the drop of a hat. He proceded to rip the club a new asshole with one of the best techno beat downs I had ever heard. I think this is probably the best set I've ever heard him play. It was the hardest I've ever heard him play too. With Richie, the harder he plays, the better IMO.
I agree with Kaniz that he in the past has been pretty hit or miss. Although the last 5 or 6 times I've seen him he's been at least good, but usually really good. I think it has to do with the fact that he's drinking again lol. Drunk Richie = better set.
I remember a time when he was one of the biggest crowd draws in Toronto. He stopped playing here as much, and as a result has lost a lot of his popularity here. Although his initially popularity originated in North America (Detroit specifically), I think he made the right choice though by concentrating on the European market, because his growth in popularity there far outweighs any popularity he ever had in North America. He's trying to position himself as a global A-list DJ, and I think he's almost there. It seems he's trying to make his way back into the US market now with WMC and now Minitek. Hopefully he extends that to Canada with a Contakt date in Toronto!

Closer and Consumed are my two favorite Plastikman albums. Everyone gets gushy over Sheet One, but Closer and Consumed get continual replay by me. They were also the two albums that really sparked my love of minimal techno. IMO - that is what minimal techno really is - so much of the "minimal" coming out these days isn't all that minimal. Much of it is still pretty good - so not to diss it too much
DE9: Transitions has a perma-home on my iPod. Initially I downloaded it, and was so impressed I went out and purchased it the day after. Piracy is bad, arrrrrrrrr!
I also really respect what he did with that album. Not only did he have the CD mix, he also included an extended DVD mix, he put extra videos onto it, and was kind enough to include a high-quality version of the DVD mix in MP3 format.
The man really does embrace technology, and I have allot of respect for him for that.
on a semirelated note: Highroller, I like your taste in music and your take on techno
always enjoy reading your reviews.
