Quite the adventure you're having - looking forward to having visuals to augment the description! Wish I still had the energy for that kind of messiness. And I've never understood the hype behind Magda - in the couple of times I've seen her, she's been an uninspiring yawn.

Seriously. She was HORRIBLE when I saw her earlier this year.

I disagree that it was the worst, as most sets this weekend haven't been particularly great, including Hawtin. But I will say that she wasn't up to par.. great opening...she lost me too quickly in her 2nd hour.

I don't think dinosaurs are loved in New York... review to come later..

fuck you minitek

more rant later, nap is needed now

Posted by jchung52 on Sep-15-2008 19:00:

was it their first year or something? i've heard some bad stories

Posted by kaniz on Sep-15-2008 19:03:

When M_US had a showcase at TIL, Magda made me leave the club. Although, that was more due to the ear-piercing levels that she cranked things up to after Hawtin. I cant remember if her tracks were any good or not, I just remember thinking "ouch, my ears" - even as I stood as far away from the speakers as possible with my fingers in my ears. Left shortly after.

Part me of wanted to check out Minitek this year, but money / logistics didn't allow it to happen - from the sounds of it, I didn't miss that much. Had I lived in NYC, probably would of checked it out, but with the fuckups that I'm hearing - doesnt seem like it'd be worth the roadtrip.

Clearly, there were some mishaps with the organization. But can we please be patient with first-time promoters and see how they recify the situation in years to come? I mean who ELSE is putting their money and asses on the line to bring NYC something different?

Yes, I am clearly understanding that people who came from out of town may have had more inconveniences than us locals, but the fact of the matter is that they TRIED and will learn.

And to be honest, the mess-ups did nothing to ruin my weekend. I didnt go friday night, so, no big loss there, but saturday and sunday were just awesome with the beats. And this coming from a girl who likes trance. Once you got into minitek, it was a great experience. It was so nice to see different faces, different DJ's, and a comepletely different atmosphere than is typical in NYC. I was greatful for it.

Honestly, I wouldnt stand for the disorganization to continue over the years. but I am also confident that the promoters are going to learn from their first time experiences and continue to bring something new for us (which us NY'ers have been longin for). I think, based on how much fun the actual *EVENT* was, that it would be worth another try next year. however, I feel as if this is there first and only strike. The messups were so many that people will not return if this happens two years in a row. live and learn promoters!! But all aside, I have to give them props for finding new venues so quickly and at least giving us a place to go for our money.

regardless, the music and vibe was pure awesomeness. The outdoor/day events won me over the most. I loooved Matthew Dear (sp?) good god! loved it. (remember this is my first tehcno/minimal event, so I am still clueless about the names.....) And saturday, I didnt hear a single DJ that dissapointed. Driving beats and no bloopy-bloopy bullshit.

The techno bus ride between venues was CLASSIC and one of the best times I have had in ages. Screaming partiers going buckwild to music, yelling out the windows, cheering, eating fried dough, haha such a fucking MOMENT! The bus driver kept yelling shit in the speakerphone to get us pumped for the next event!! haha! loves it! (quote of the bus ride: "F*CK American Apparel and the hipsters who wear it!!!!") hahah!

Loved Studio B, although it was soo hot and the DJ before Magda made me want to put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger. It was everything I have always hated about minimal: no flow, beats all over the place and slooooowwwwwwwww (blooppy bloop-water-dripping-type sounds). DJ's like him are the sole reason I have never gone to a minimal event. good GOD, I couldnt wait for him to end. The only music I didnt care for the entire weekend! Regardless, I am glad I tried something new because the other DJs were on point.

Sunday was def my favourite day. Partying with the canucks is always a shitshow, and nothing changed this time around. I heart them <3 To my virgin cribby, NYC and public transpo wasnt nice to you but you are the coolest fuckin dinosaur ever!!) and my jenners, I love you to death! Nice to meet the new canucks as well I love the lil asian chick (sara?? simone??) so cute, and I wanna just put her in my pocket and carry her around with me! haha! good times peeps!
music was on point and I was in pure smiles the entire time.

btw even more shenanigans on the subway ride home (the rides after the parties have proven to be comeplete shitshow shenanigans). Tons of partiers the whole way home singing and chatting and taking pics ("I PITY THE FOOL!!!") SO many inside jokes and quotes and nonsense from this weekend. (count dracula, jenn freaking out over a fan, sesame street, the sketch box, sugalips, etc.....) just what I needed.

Overall, I had a great freakin time. I missed most of the mishaps due to pure timing, and I honestly believe that this festival could not only be HUGE, but even grow in future years based on the turnout. If the promoters get their shit together, it was a great feeling to know that the people WILL turnout for this type of event

Did anyone get a chance to catch Seph?

Posted by devnull on Sep-15-2008 22:54:

allright, got some sleep and its time to show to the peeps here that didn't miss much!

This weekend was a disaster/nightmare on so many levels for this event! For some reason, as soon I got into my hotel room, everything went downhill that day. I was supposed to buy a router in brooklyn on the friday (to save on shipping and customs)...but when I called the store...they told me they were moving to New Jersey. I wish the guy I had talked to a few day earlier woulda told me. As a result, we decided to venture into manhattan.

Not knowing the subway system....we took a local train and it took forever to get to the island...and once we got out of the subway...it was raining out, bahhhh. At one point, we hopped back on the subway and went to a museum west of central park and got to see the dinosaur exposition....Cribby u missed that! And we got in for free for some reason!

After that, we went back to the hotel to get some sleep before the night event.....the sleeping didnt happen! 2am rolls and we venture back to the city. At the subway entrance....6 cops and 2 dogs
lol. And again we get on a damn local train....

2:30-3am, we find the venue...and we are told its at capacity, then other bs, etc etc. Found the other TA's stuck at the door like us and found a lil bar to chill a bit, hoping that issues would clear up by the time we get back....nope it didnt. When we got back, everyone was being thrown out (4am ish), nobody talking about a replacement venue, nothing...so we ventured up to times square to enjoy the downtown at night a bit. So pissed off for missing Paco, Ritch AND Carola...was the main guy i wanted to see. Only later on saturday, I am told that it was moved to rebel...argggghhh

On day 2, weather is nice, not super hot, sunny. We decided to do our own thing by visiting china town and doing the city bus tour. I found china town (canal street) to be quite interesting. Everyone asking you if you want rolex's, bags and other stuff. You walk into stores and they open little doors to send you upstairs to show you more stuff. However, the asians selling that stuff are close to being the rudest pple ever!!! Ventured in SOHO for a bit, found those stores with ridiculous prices and pple were buying that shit!

The bus tour around the city was great. I recommend it to anyone visiting NYC. This was the highlight of my weekend! After that 2hr bus tour, we went back to the hotel to refresh and hit up coney island at around 9ish. Got there and saw a bit of hearthrob....to only find out that they shut it down at 10pm....when magda was supposed to play....great..only get to hear 1 hr of music that day...
At least i got to find about the new night venue...

As Jay as said, the ride to find that damn studio B place was a nightmare. literally 1hr cab ride spinning in circles with a few pple in the cab going nuts. I think at one point we were up in queens almost. A 5 miles ride turned into a 30miles ride...
Once at studio B, it was a zoo outside, the staff didn't have a fucking clue what to do with the 100s of people waiting to be let in. they were expecting people with bracelets (most pple never got to get it!). After some pushing and shoving, bitchin at the bouncer, they started to understand ...and a lady opened the door and had a few go in...luckily it was some of us...
The place wasnt bad and the sound was decent...but it was a sauna. By the time we were in...they were out of water...then a bit later...out of cups to put ice and water in.. Magda was meh overall. She had me going for the first hour...then lost many of us. We ended up leaving at 4 when Houle was coming on. Thankfully..the ride back home wasnt a disaster!

On sunday, I took the staten island ferry to see the statue of liberty and take pics of the financial district from the water. Then we checked out ground zero....which is a large hole the size of a block! By 4, we headed to coney island...the subway ride was the longest thing ever, delays after delays. At coney, we tried out the coney's dogs and fries....YUMMMYYYYYYY Then the nightmare repeated itself at the door. Lineup of 100 pple waiting to get in. Bouncers not organized whatsoever. The worst of all, they were letting pple that wanted to buy tickets through...but not the pple who already had their tickets in, such as disgrace. Took an hour to get in...so I only had music from 6-10.

The sound at coney island was phenomenal, very crisp and loud. David Squillace was killing it at the first stage. After him, we saw Audion at the other stage. WOW! the guy was something A+! He didn't fuck around and had the crowd by the balls!

Richie came on at 8, overall, his set was OK. It really felt like a DJ set in comparison to his other sets. Only towards the end he started playing around. His set was quite banging. I dont know what happened in the last 30 mins, the sound went down and the music was pretty crappy, most pple were standing around....and the last track he played.....was pure crap (80s track)

As mentioned by others, the day venue had no lights setup...wtf
We didnt see any of the artistic stuff they were promoting so much.

If it wasn't for the city stuff I've done, the weekend would have been a total waste.

How can you fuck things up this bad? If they do make another minitek next year, I sure ain't going. I have no faith in them whatsoever. And even if they get their shit together, NYC is way too expensive for what its worth! Spent $800+ to see 5 DJ's in total

Here's a laundry list for Minitek:
-Get the proper permits or rent a large enough space
-Switching venues over and over is not acceptable as most people never get the details
-Get security staff that know whats going on....Inform them goddamit
-Dont make pple with tickets wait in line and let new people go right in front of them, its disgraceful.
-If you fuckup, at least have the decency to do something for your customers, few free drinks, something...
-Have enough water to sell!
-Have smaller plans, multiple venues is too much for you guys to manage
-Dont be over ambitious. The artistic stuff and RFID....you blew it

On the postive, I am glad to have met Kelly and shelly. You guys were the friendliest New Yorkers out there (most of em were so rude and useless!)

We have it golden in toronto. Now I understand it when others say toronto people and others are friendly!!

awwww, thanks I see you took some of my advice in what to do in nyc (ie: bus tour, soho, canal, etc....)

lol this weekend was a disaster on many levels. the weather, the organization, the fire on the train tracks (delays of the coney island trains), etc...... I feel really bad for people who came from out of town, and I hope everyone realizes that this is not the norm here. I have had many of great nights here and wish it had worked out that way for the travellers

Sounds like a total gong show. You guys had to realize this was a possibility before you went? Brand new festival done by people with experience running one off parties in a city that hasn't really ever had an event of this size before - an american city, nonetheless?

The good thing is that at least you were in NYC, and not Detroit or Idaho or something.

lol 99.9% of those people were foreigners, too. I went up to the front to see my friend at one point and not a single damn person spoke english up there. lol this festival was def full of out-of-towners which makes it even worse because they spent way more money to come here.

Edit: lol at calling shelley a new yorker!! Its a sign, shelley! Even your own kind think u are from nyc guess u better hurry up and make it offical. Btw love shelley and her bag of tricks.she is always prepared and makes life easier on us ALL

OK...I finally have enough energy to cover Sunday.

After about an hours sleep I forced myself to find some food and head down to CI to try and make the best of it. Got to CI around 1PM and got in pretty quickly (about 15 minutes) and they gave us the RFID wristband (didn't use its technology, just an old school sharpie marker). Why they didn't do the same Saturday so us weekend holders didn't have to line up at each venue was just another stupid move. They had Sunday organized better, but that isn't saying much compared to how bad it was.

Got in and they were now using tickets for drinks (Jenny was handling all the cash...guess people were pocketing the money from the day before). They ran out of beer quickly and often. A couple mangled sketchbags provided some entertainment.

Music was great again. It saved this festival. Konrad Black (bring him to Toronto), Troy Pierce, Audion (one of the best sets all weekend), Guido Schnieder, and David Squilace were spot on. Richie came on early since they had to close the Coney Island venue by 10PM. Richie was good...nothing too special. I think he needs more than 2 hours to truely get into it.

It was at this point I decided the 5 - 6 hours of sleep I had since 5AM Friday morning was enough so I decided to go to the afterparty at Cielo. As I was giving Shelly my bag to take home they announced a second afterparty at a place called CPACK and they would have busses to it. Since there were DJ's that had been bumped I figured I would go to that one instead. Found the bus only to hear the security say it was just for the artist (and their whores for the night). Most of the DJ's got on that bus (Pierce, Audion, Guido, Konrad Black, etc.) I started to get excited about this afterparty. A bunch of us got on the next bus and followed to DJ's. I met a couple guys from Belgium who had followed Richie all over Europe. A lot of people asked the bus driver to pull over and they got off and went to Cielo. Finally the bus dropped us of and pointed to the other bus who told us where he had left the dj's. There were only 5 of us left on the bus (the other buses went elsewhere) and we realized we were not at the afterparty but a private party for the DJ's at a small club that couldn't have held more than 200 people. After trying to get in we found this messy hispanic guy named Mike who was in charge of the party. He told us we couldn't go in...then he said give him some time to think. (Konrad Black had trouble getting back in). We explained the bus had brought us there...that I was from Toronto, the other guys from Belgium. He then proceeded to let all these drunk messy friends into the party (none of which I had seen at Minitek). Over heard a passerby talk to a girl asking who was spinning inside ( the music sounded great). Her reply was "I don't know, some skinny blonde guy but he's really good" (was it Richie? I can only assume)WTF...people like that get in and they couldn't see the situation they had left us three in. So fucking close to what I'm sure it would have been the party I would have remembered for ever.
We ended up going to Cielo which was good times. Got back to my hotel around 7ish and passed out for a couple hours before heading to the airport for my flight.

I understand why a lot of you are pissed and rightfully so. It was a complete clusterfuck in terms of organization. However, the music was great all weekend, and I got my fill of music (yes I did have to work for it and didn't get much sleep because of the organizers). Showing up late in the afternoon or early evening doesn't leave much time for music and fun.

It would have been easy to write the whole weekend and experience off, but fuck that...I know Shelly and I had fun. I will never go to another Minitek if they try to do it again. They will know how fucked up their organization was.

Anyway...Sleep calls

If anyone from NYC knows this "Mike" guy let him know he could have helped out 3 out of towners who had spent and lot of money and time supporting something he was obviously involved in. Through no fault of our own we ended up being dropped off at that party but a bus Minitek provided...there wasn't 100 of us...only 3. Way to think globally and help make things right with a few people at least.

i notice people noticing booth whores when i go to the club. thats how fucking ironic i am, my scene awareness is like a 6th sense i can smell people having a good time from across the dance floor and i glare at them menacingly until i am certain theyve shivered at least once in shame.
