And Vestax retakes it's mixer crown.

I would agree with that, but honestly - they put so much effort into creating a decent feeling flexible control surface, the lack of a sound card really felt less painful after playing around with it.

I don't know if it's worth a grand, but I'd probably pay close to that.

its actually much better theres no sound card... vestax stuff is tanklike, but run sound through it and well... its no allen&heath/rane thats for sure

Hmmmm, well sound card or otherwise, its a giant leap in the right direction IMO.
Layout works nicely for ableton, if I hadn't just bought a remote, I'd probably be strongly considering it.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that it work as an out of the box mixer by the way Allied nations, not like the zero 8. I was thinking more of just building in like an echo indigo card (preferably with more outs) and each output having a single gain knob or something...

I would buy this just for the sake of making tracks at my house.

How big is this thing btw?

Well, thats to their credit, still seems overpriced though, especially given that you still need a soundcard. Now if they built a 4 channel soundcard in, that would justify the price.

I agree it is a bit pricey, but there is really no competition to bring the price down.

If I wanted to mix using Ableton only I would definitely want something like this.

So yeah. I preordered one, $200 down.

I also have a feeling in the next 6 months I'll also be repurchasing a set of tech 12's as well as Traktor Scratch.

That's what I'm using now. I've been looking for something small to control the effects and loop functions. I really like this Vestax, but it is way too big.

Does anyone have any experience with the midi controllers from Faderfox?

I recently purchased my tech 12's and have plans to get Scratch (already use Traktor standalone). Now they come out with something like this. I'm trying to determine if having TS AND a big fancy controller is really overkill for me.

Of course, I don't use Ableton either and never have... but this alone makes me want to start thinking about it again.

I personally think it is overkill for Traktor, but I would like to demo one as a control surface for Logic and Ableton.

Agreed, especially since I use an external mixer... I also produce, but I have a keyboard/controller for that. I hate dragging the keyboard out to use the knobs and sliders for Traktor.

But man, something this nice just makes me want it because it's so nice. lol.

I don't know - with up to 4 channels running to Traktor and the rest open for effects, samples, etc. I could really see taking the time to set up a very fun set with this thing.

I think it will take a long time to figure out - but just the amount of options available, ease of use, and build quality really set me off on this.

I will probably also use it for some production aspects too - but for the most part in the next year I want to pick this up, a new laptop dedicated to music/production, and Traktor and see what happens.

How would you trigger samples if you're already using all four decks? Or are you talking about triggering programs external to Traktor?

Indeed. Using VST's/Appleton.

Posted by david.michael on Oct-01-2008 20:38:

Yeah, the thought's definitely intriguing. I have a feeling I'm going to spend a lot of time trying to talk myself out of getting it.

I was just talking about for my own use. I already have a midi controller, but I want a smaller one. At this point I'd rather use the mouse for the few functions I like than break out a controller. The four decks in Traktor and the filters on the Xone are enough for me.

Like I said though it would be great for those wanting to use Ableton etc...

anyone seen a competitive CDN $ for the Vestax?
