awwwwwwwwww.......c'mon!!! but it's fun though.

ever hear the saying.... "DOn't toot your own horn" ?? American's tend to dwell in their own prosperity. Not good when the majority of the world lives in unprosperous conditions. It's like the smart kid, or the rich kid at school who flaunts it and thinks they're superior to the other kids. Then they wonder why they get ganged up on and beaten up after school!! or jumped and robbed.

Ah, my child, I shall not bestow upon ye the glories of the Unified Nation of America. For in so bestowing, thine own European ideals would wither and crumble, and there would be much gnashing of teeth. Thinke ye, therefore, on such things as you are able to accomplish your OWN land. Let the rejoicement spread throughout the land, rejoice, rejoice. Rejoice, for now such a time has come that few mortals have been able to witness. BEHOLD! The time is now! The future is nothing, the past holds no secrets, the only mystery is NOW and what shall ye do with it. Shall ye turn your eyes to the wickedness of others, thus forgetting the corruption that doth eat away at thine very soul?! Nay, child, I shall not tell ye of America. Let it be enough that I say that it is the greatest nation on this earth, and the people who inhabit that land dance and sing, they glory their union with their country. Hope, therefore, hope that one day your nation may be looked on with such feeling that people will go out unto the streets and proclaim to the skies "We come, we ARE!" that will be the time that thou shouldst be working towards, the time of now.

When you have a horn as huge as ours its like a bad pair of shoes, it squeaks no matter how one turns or walks, and people take offense at the squeaking while ignoring the fact that it is the property of the thing which causes it to squeak, not the property of the person inhabiting the shoe. Just as people inhabit America, they shouldnt be blamed for its greatness, it is great in its own right through ideals and government, and if all the people were to die and new peopel inhabit it, the same ideals and laws which uphold our country would continue to make it prosper.

Side note: Im rich and smart and I beat up the other kids. The few who tried got their heads smashed into the walls !

side side note: this has a great symbolic link to what America is

Ok, so I mainly hang out in the swedish section, but I just had to reply,

Since the September 11th attacks, I've actually begun feeling even more anti-american. Probably because of the way Bush handled it all...
America ALWAYS gets what it wants and isn't afraid to pull "rank" to do so. It is the only super-power in the world and can to what it wants. The sad thing is that too often it does excatly so, with no respect to other countries.

I mean, you Americans must realise that the significantly large portion of muslims in the middle-east dislike you for a reason? They aren't all just stupid fucks who do so.

I have loads of issuses with the US, but even more with Sweden, so I'll just shut up know and confidently sit back in my chair while all Americans realise why we don't like your nation all that much.

Posted by kolkiewolkie on May-29-2002 08:31:

well, I've read all of it.. including the links given..

.. I've been thinking about this awhile.. what I should post here...

I'll try to say it in understandable language, but it's kinda hard for me since I am a little confused with the whole situation

anywayz, there was put that "all you do is bash america, and not looking at other (bad) things that happen in other countries"... true, true.. BUT, In my opinion america has a certain, what is the word, leadership in this world... basicly that's not a bad thing, but leaders should be an example of how the rest of the world should live. But if the entire world would live like the US (yes, I am generalizing here, I know that in the US ways of living your life are very different from person to person), the end of the world would be VERY quick.

Basicly I am trying to say that Americans are not bad, but they just have this lifestyle which is, in my opinion, a little bit too much like: first taking care of our own lives, than we look if we can do anything for others....
I must say, it is logically to live your life like that when you have that oppurtunity.. BUT, since the USA is the most important land on this planet the influence a lifestyle like that has is sooooooo BIG, that the consequences can be lethal.... and maybe the rest of the world is just jealous, maybe (and I can rationaly confirm it) the whole world wants more of "the USA lifestyle" but it simply is not possible... and because of that peeps tend to bash america/usa.. I think the USA should take a little bit more of responsibility for the rest of the world (not that they don't do anything for the rest of the world.. they do alot, but it could be more).

and the statement that americans are not complaining about life: HELLO! WAKY WAKY, you guys have all the possibilities of the country... no-one would complain about that...

..that's it for now.

If you have any comments, please feel free to post them, I won't flame but will try to give comments if neccassery... let's say I am open for a good discussion, but I do remind you that I am a little confused about the whole thingy here

This is exactly the kind of "We're the greatest"-rhetorics that sparkles anti-american feelings abroad.

I've only been to the US once and at that point only for a week. Consequently I can only comment on the people I met that week. They were all very outgoing and friendly but those we talked to all had that american pride. E.g. me hiking in Yosemite and meeting some guy who (rightly) tells me how beautiful everything is in that area. When he leaves me, he can't help teasing: "If this was Europe, you would have passed at least ten bars on the way up this mountain". Very innocent but with a hint of superiority. There were other examples but as mentioned I cannot judge americans as a whole based on these.

What I can do, however, is judge your government and its decisions on foreign policy, because these are facts. I can also decide whether I find gun control useful, whether capital punishment is morally sound in my book and whether I think public transportation is a good idea.

And Orbax, you can judge behaviour in Europe as well, and apparently you have. But please tell us what you know of our communications systems, corrupt populace, corrupt police force, and corrupt governments. And when postulating that "Europeans should quit sitting on the fence until its clear who will win and then bash the losers." tell us what you are thinking of. General statements like these are of no value.

About "Europeans trying to make themselves look better bashing America" I partly agree. Lots of politicians with minority complexes in Europe will often use the US as the big bad wolf, but when that is said, you shouldn't brush aside all european criticism on these grounds alone I think. Sometimes, we just might be right.

as far as bashing on our country, yes i agree w/ tiesto14 and orbax here, people seem to be soooo hypocritical these days...ah well,''With great power comes great responsibility'' (courtsey of Spiderman, the movie, lol)

God bless America......

edit: and people also seem to ignore the fact HOW MUCH AMERICA helps out other countries.....they 'bash' on America while we are busy feeding their poor....hmmm

And no shit we are gonna pull our FUCKING RANK. IF SOMEONE RAPED YOUR FUCKING MOM YOU WOULD USE EVERY GOD DAMN SHRED OF POWER YOU HAD TO GET BACK. We happen to be more powerful than most. WHY. WHY DO YOU THINK WE ARE SO MUCH MORE POWERFUL. THINK ABOUT THAT. Think why America is so powerful. Do you even know? Or do you think power is something you dig up like a pot of fuckin gold at the end of a rainbow. Ignorant shit man, ignorant. Talkin like we just HAPPEN to have power. Like we got it like we left a tooth under our pillow and a little fuckin fairy came prancing along, waved its wand and POOF america is powerful. WE worked and died and suffered for our country harder than anyone else and the work we put into it is apparent.

We dont complain about OTHER peoples lives.

And America gives more aid than any other country in the world. When tsnunami strikes Japan we are there, when earthquakes shatter villages in south america, we send aid. We lifted up Europe by its sorry broken ass after the world wars and "forgot" billions in debts owed to us, and we continue to give. We are the greatest, least respected nation on earth.

Your communications systems and especially the internet are based on the x.25 and x.50 protocols. You most likely dont know what this means. Ill tell you. Outdated. Pure and simple. I think Moses talked to God with the same system that you guys are using.

You actually believe they are all just stupid fucks? How would you like if Oman and Jemen suddenly decided they would have airbases in the US so they could get your oil?!

US foreign policy went downhill when you elected the stupidest fuck ever to rule over your country.

God your post made me mad cause it's everything I hate with the US,

After you read this use your little scrolly wheel on your little mousy mouse and go up to the part where I said I was using those examples to prove a point. That people who dont know shit, shouldnt talk shit. hmmm what else. Oh, and what I said is still true for the most part. Except all of Europe isnt sitting on the side of Israel. You guys definitely want them swept into the sea. If you want to debate that fact the Europe hates Israel and wouldnt mind the arab nations wiping them out, start a new thread adressing that topic.

Posted by Orbax on May-29-2002 08:51:

Vitryss. are you ACTUALLY arguing the fact that many arabs are illiterate? When many women are FORBIDDEN to learn to count and read? Are you that ignorant? tell me now if you are so I can lower my expectations of any further posts you make lower than I already have.

and the "stupidest fuck ever" seems to whipping the shit out of the arabs. where does that place them on the grand scale of things. What is below Stupidest Fuck Ever?

and about hating the US...you would sell your soul to live here. I can read the jealousy in your words. The bitter hatred as you rail against fate that YOU...WERENT...BORN...HERE... oh how it burns in your heart, twisting it, charring it black with hatred.

Your economically and militarily superior because of one fact: It's about 150 years since a war was waged in your land. And...SENTENCES ARE NOT MADE VALID BY CAPITALIZING THEM.

Posted by Blik on May-29-2002 09:10:

the reason why we have a thing against americans...? well, just look at Orbax, I think I made our point very clear

I've been to America 2 times, great country, nice people nothing wrong with it, but when I hear you say that America is the best country in the world, the most powerfull nation in the world and all that other nonsense.. just makes me sick

if you were so damn powerfull why is Osama Bin Laden still alive, how can they attack you on your own territory, America isn't the best country in the world, no one has the right to say that....

and about the aid, Holland is the country that gives the most aid in the whole world!! and that's a fact.... I don't give a damn about that, it doesn't makes Holland the best country in the world

being patriottic is good, but you can go out of line, it is because of people like Orbax that 9/11 happened, he is the reason that people hate the Americans so much...

Lovely. You "elucidate" one of my questions, by saying that I am ignorant and using ridicolous exaggerations and then ignore the rest of them.

For your information I can tell you that I do know a lot about Internet traffic, and as long as the spread of ADSL and Cable in the states is at the point where it is now, I don't think you should consider the speed of the main grid.

For somebody, who obviously thinks of himself as intelligent, I find it puzzling that you cannot see that your hate posts do not benefit your cause. Or do you simply try to provoce thought?

Posted by WhiteRussian on May-29-2002 09:23:

Blik and tranceaholic put my points well, no need to repeat them.

Yes, Abraham Lincoln WAS a great mean, shame you fucked it up, that's what's so ironic.

Was actually hoping to read some good arguments in this thread WHY I shouldn't dislike the US, but this thread has probably more than anything in the last month just furthered my hate for the US, shame,

I'll just stop with two other tidbits, the US did NOT save Europe in WW2, Russia did, which you would know if you read your history.
Oh yeah, did anyone else know that the US and Somalia is the only two countries in the world that have not signed the UN convention on childrens rights?

*sigh*

for a start, that thread coup made... i dont think it was a serious thread. its a joke, and that is something a lot of americans cant handle... americans do not understand european humour so this is maybe the root of the problem. mit was meant as a piss-take. and if u were european you would understand that we take the piss out of ourselves probably more than the US.

secondly, why dont americans seem to understand WHY so much of the world dislikes them? because they are too far up their own arses to see the reasons. sorry to put this bluntly (and im not saying every single US citizen is up their arse) but its true. that episode of southpark that was shown last friday here in the UK put it beautifully... it was the one where they went to afghanistan.. it showed how american pride is taken way too seriously, and it also showed just how div-like the american people can be. this isnt thru any fault of their own, just the way that u guys are brought up and taught in school. in SP... a scene in afghanistan where the boys are talkin to afghan boys... the afghan boys say they hate america, kyle stan etc thought that everywhere loves america but discovered this was not true.

fact is, ppl love to hate americans. dont take it so personally, grow a sense of humour

Posted by elektrikal on May-29-2002 09:51:

it is true that alot of americans dont understand why many foreigners dislike america but on the other hand there are many americans who do know why and would like to see change in our countries ways. but i dont think anyone could really blame americans for being americans because many americans have not experienced prolonged periods of their life outside of america, and dont really find any need to. not to be seen as overly patriotic of my country but i do think the united states is a great country and a great place to live given the right circumstances. the only major thing i see wrong with america nowadays is its foreign policy, imo i think we should just ditch isreal cuz staying there will just cause more (perhaps catastrophic) problems. its probably a one sided opinion but oh well.

fact is they shouldnt be there in the first place...

but thats a totally different argument

yes, the foreign policy. its fcuked up. it needs changing. the US also needs to grow ears and listen to other nations opinions... and also learn to take other nations into consideration. the 'retaliation' for the sept 11 attacks has done nothing but spark off shit in india and pakistan for instance.

they are still going thru with this star wars shit... its quite obvious its making the rest of the world a bit oo-eer about the US (because they are not listening again)... this thing shouldnt be just us based, it should be fekkin worldwide.. so that if any country has any nukes headin for it then it can be dealt with. as it currently stands it looks like the US is doing it so they can point guns at anywhere in the world. this prolly isnt the case, but thats how it looks.

they should stop trying to run other peoples countries. they should stop thinking that the US is the be all and end all of life.

american ppl arnt so much what bothers me, its the american attitude as a whole

Posted by Renegade on May-29-2002 10:07:

These sorts of topics grow tiresome very quickly, but I think I'll jump in and say my piece before it degenerates further.

The main question posed by Tiesto14, I think, was why people of other other countries are so quick to jump up and criticise the US. I agree, that too often the US is villified needlessly, and that a lot of people tend to dwell on the faults that the US has rather than any positives it may have. I think it should be pointed out, firstly, that any "attack" (although I don't think this is really the right word) on the US, made generally, is not usually directed at its inhabitants, but usually more towards the government and anyone else who may follow its particular ideologies. We are not stupid: we understand that the United States is a big place, and as such many different types of people, with different views and opinions inhabit it. When we criticise the US, it is important to understand that the criticisms are levelled, usually, on a political or cultural level, never on a personal level. Anyone who gets personally offended when any criticism is levelled at the country they arbitrarily found themselves born into, needs to get their thought processes sorted out. The second you take personal offence at any criticism levelled at the country you inhabit, then you enter the realm of patriotic fundamentalism, and you are no better - idealogically - then the fundamentalistic terrorists America is trying so hard to irradicate.

Sadly though, so many American people are indoctrinated with this sort of patriotism, which leads inevitably to the infallibility complex demonstrated quite nicely by Orbax above.

quote:
yes they are. They are all illiterate, stupid, fucks. Their government knows that the easiest way to tame a population is to keep it ignorant.

All middle-eastern people are "illiterate, stupid fucks"? Nice one man. Good to see that logic hasn't gotten in the way of your blinding xenophobia. And I agree entirely with your view about taming populations through ignorance: teaching nothing but American history and geography in schools should ensure that the paranoid, xenophobic rationale lives on I'm guessing.

I'm not sure whether there was any tongue-in-cheek in this post (and I certainly hope there was) but it's this pig-ignorance about anything beyond the American shores that is part of the reason for this growing anti-American sentiment around the globe. You are quick to point out your country's positive involvement in external affairs (Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq etc) but the reality is, it only seems to participate in the betterment of the globe where its own interests are at stake - the Kyoto Protocol anyone? You were quick to lauch attacks on Afghanistan, but where were your peace-keeping troops in Fiji and East Timor recently? The Australian government asked repeatedly for the help of the United States in these countries - not unreasonable given that Australia has fought beside the US in virtually every war this century - but because the unrest in Fiji and East Timor was unlikely to in any affect your country, Australia was given the cold shoulder. Despite our comparitively small military force, it was basically up to us alone to keep the peace in these two nations. And I'm sure there are other similar examples of "selective altruism" but I think I've made my point.

quote:
Think why America is so powerful. Do you even know? Or do you think power is something you dig up like a pot of fuckin gold at the end of a rainbow. Ignorant shit man, ignorant. America was built on a certain set of ideals otherwise unheard of at the time. The men who built the nation of America were great men, very wise and learned. They had seen the misery caused in states ruled by monarchs or other totalitarianistic leaders, and saw the opportunity to create a nation based on worthwhile, objective values. And they succeeded. The declaration of independence and the original American constitution represent a political dawn - that of democracy and capitalism - that has since spread right around the world and, by and large, benefited it greatly. The men who founded America were great men, and the priciples that America was founded on are among the most forward-thinking ever (even though most of them are actually taken from the philosophies of the European political philosophers of the day. Several of the more memorable phrases in the Declaration of Independence - "We hold these truths to be self evident", "All men are created equal", "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" and so on - were actually taken, virtually word for word, from Englishman John Locke's Second Treatise).

It was these principles that immediately gave the US a head start over the rest of the world. It's capitalist ideals allowed it to create the seeds for the massive economy we see today, and when World War 1 decimated European economies, the US was free to stand up and use its economic power to muscle its way into the position of political power it finds itself in now. It didn't come into power because it was the "best" country, it came into power because it had implemeted the capitalist ideals much earlier than other countries, and because the collective empires of European countries began to crumble, lessening their own power as a result, leaving the door vacant for a new superpower.

Anyway, I don't think all this is particularly relevent, but since you seemed to be implying that America became as powerful as it is today simply because it worked harder than the other countries I think it's only fair to point out that, to a large degree, this is a fanciful myth.

quote:
''With great power comes great responsibility'' (courtsey of Spiderman, the movie, lol)

And that was to be my next point. If you wish to self-righteously lay claim to a position of power, then you have to be expected to bear the brunt of the criticism. You not only should be criticised more, but also need to be criticised more to ensure that there is some degree of balance in the planet, and that it isn't subtley taken over by US political, economic and social ideals.

If you were ever to find fault in your country, you wouldn't blame the guy who runs the store down the road for it. It's not his fault if the trade-gap is widening. He is in no position of power to change things. Instead you go to the president, or to your congressman, someone who is in a position of power to make a difference. Thus, for the rest of the world to see the US slowly eating up the planet's resources (4% of the population, 25% of the resource consumption) and either being too hasty to intermediate in a conflict or not hasty enough, then the rest of the world is free to ask the most powerful country on the Earth why it acted in such a fashion. If the president starting hoarding away your country's resources so as to make himself richer, and then either acted in an overly draconian manner, or an overly indifferent manner, then it's to be expected that you would reproach him for it.

And the analogy concerning the president either abusing or not using enough of his power runs parallel with the current global situation. I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

quote:
About "Europeans trying to make themselves look better bashing America" I partly agree. Lots of politicians with minority complexities in Europe will often use the US as the big bad wolf, but when that is said, you shouldn't brush aside all european criticism on these grounds alone I think. Exactly, agree entirely.

Some anti-American sentiment may be born of an inferiority complex, or of envy of some kind, but it's irrational to assume that all of it must be. This is where we come back the to "infallibility complex" I spoke of before - so many Amercians have been so deeply indoctrinated with the "greatness" of their land, that they are unable to think objectively and identify any faults it may have. No country is perfect, I agree entirely, but so long as imperfections are acknowledged, and some attempt is made to rectify them, then it is hard to have any qualms with the operation of such a country. If, however, a country has faults obvious to the rest of the world but, for some reason, not to the inhabitents of this country, then you are free to question why this should be the case. Anti-Americanism isn't something that's spawned up overnight as a result of "envy" or the feeling of inferiority, and to view it in such a way is dangerously naive. People do not fly planes into massive buildings out of envy alone. There are far more complex causes than this. I'm not saying what happened on Sept 11 was right or in any way justifiable, but I'm saying that the US has failed to take heed of the criticisms levelled at it, and that, in some ways, such an horendous catastophe was inevitable.

Instead of analysing why they may be so hated by certain people overseas, the US government just came to the conclusion that goes something along the lines of "we are always right, therefore they are entirely wrong to reproach us" and nothing was learned. I'll repeat, yet again, that what happened on Sept 11 was entirely inhumane, unjustifiable and monsterous, but that the sentiment behind the actions, perhaps, was not so much so.

Anyway, at this point I would like to point out once more, that I have nothing specifically against America, and I certainly do not have anything against any of its citizens. My qualms are with certain policies of American government, and some of the general principles that currently underlie the stereotypical American mode of thought, that is all. And I certainly did not intend to cause offence, which leaves me with one simple guideline: if you did find yourself personally offended by any of this, then you're probably one of the people I'm talking about.

Anyway, enough.
