Exactly. How many times a day do people take the bus without incident?

this sucks, I have to take a 3 hour bus ride from calgary to invermere coming up... can people please stop getting stabbed?!

Posted by Spin Laden on Sep-23-2008 16:14:

Greyhound now has a policy where they charge you an extra $10 per bag that is stored on the bus.

After all this crap, shouldn't they be slashing prices?

Well the thing is it seems like it is a sign of the times, even tho that sounds stupid. Years ago, bars didn't have metal detectors and scanners and there were very few stabbings and then alla sudden stabbings and shooting erupted here in Edmonton and the bars got wands and whatnot. I would like to think that I know that the passengers on a bus i'm riding 5 hrs with doesn't have a knife on them that they could stab me for no reason. That's the problem with these incidents is that they are completely random.

times are changing, and unfortunately not in a better way

very true and it sucks indeed but high profile acts like the beheading and even Columbine have spurred on copycats, imo. Somehow, somewhere, somebody will be inspired to do something similar.

No pun intended

Even if they did have metal detectors Greyhound could run into issues in regards of the bus drivers being able to search people. Women may have a fit if a male bus driver goes to search them...throwing out the good old "morally wrong" card.

Oh nothing's changing ffs. It's only TWO occurrences, not even enough to establish any sort of a pattern or correlation or anything. Not to mention statistically speaking... but I'm not even going to bother going there.

Edit: The preceding was obviously not Katie.

Posted by Spin Laden on Sep-24-2008 15:20:

I wonder why terrorists haven't targetted buses like they have airplanes and even subway systems. Is it because the bus does not carry the same economic clout? I mean, a bus strike does not affect the executive class as much as an airline strike, for example. Just a thought.. it's too early for me to think right now

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Sep-24-2008 15:33:

or maybe it's because a bus has 50 passengers versus 300 on a plane, and is also unable to bring down a 100-story building?

In before 9/11 conspiracies about government blowing it up and not the planes. stfu no one cares.

but...but...

well, the new rules about no liquid carry-ons on planes has nothing to do with bringing down buildings.

obviously!

I'm talking about escalation of violance in GENERAL!

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Sep-24-2008 22:11:

You noticed the escalation of violence in general because of the greyhound stabbings?

Btw, that was me, lol.

lol, what is this, national dumbo day?

what I meant is - times are changing, violence is escalating.. and of course we're going to see outbursts like that, regardless if it's on a bus, plane or just on the street etc

they had stabbings on TTC/subway - should they have metal detactors there too? who knows!

I'm reading CityNews every day at work, and every freaking day there're stabbings, shootings, etc etc all around the city

It's called population growth. The number of people has increased and there fore so has the number of incidences. The truth is, the rate at which crime is occurring, is actually dropping. Canada's crime rate is at a 30 year low. There are a few reasons you think times are getting wrose:

1) you are of age to remember the incidences.
2) news media makes the stories more accessible to more people.
3) the focus of what is reported has changed.

What people should be really worried about is fraud, or financial crimes, but those stories are too boring and complicated for the evening news. Far more Canadians are affected by credit card fraud than guns or stabbings.

Oh man, I read an awesome article on a billboard at UTM on how the reported things in the media are far less likely to occur than the daily deadly things that we don't worry about at all. Been trying to find it, but I can't.

Exactly. The reason things like these TWO stabbings on the Greyhound are so widely reported and talked about, is because of how rare they are. It is so extraordinary that it sticks out in our minds.

Posted by Spin Laden on Sep-25-2008 18:03:

and it sells papers, gets airtime, etc. As you said earlier, it's now about what is being reported and HOW it is being reported. With the advent of 24-hour news media, internet, etc, it is a cutthroat business (no pun intended) so media is focusing on how to outdo the competitor.. all at the expense of the public.

this is exactly how the media wants us to react.. it sells crappy papers. With a critical mind like that, you're better off reading the Toronto Sun
