thanks for the advice buddy. no i am not going to buy a xone:3d now, I just wanted to get a basic understanding to see how this shit works as I am totally oblivious to all of this new technology that a lot of DJs seem to be embracing.

I was thinking of aiming for the CDJ-400s and I knwo them have some sort of midi capabilities, thats why I wanted to get some info from you guys first.

TA is full of ****s.

Its impossible to get help on here unless you are talkign about something thats crazy sophisticated where all you know-it-alls like to chime in with your super-elite knowlege.

For example: some kid comes on here saying I wanna start DJ'ing, whats a good set-up to get. and then he gets the typical TA response: OMG dont you know how to use google, dont ask us this shit, etc. etc. etc. Maybe the kid just wants to hear people's personal opinions and not read some standard BS that just beats around the bush the whole time.

lol, yeah you are right! you seem to be the only one on here who understands what i am trying to get at here....

I know Rann said 'you can control the software with a midi-controller'.... I just wanted some explanation as to how, because the concept of a midi-controller is totally foreign to me, all i know is that you can use it to control shit on your computer, I just dont understand HOW it works, and that is what i am trying to figure out

I think I'm (no offence) as thick as you are hence i get what you're asking.

Though I have to admit the lads have answered your questions above just they've answered them a little too well.

I'm trying to keep things simple. But I'm in no way as intelligent as the other boys on here. You just need to know how to ask the questions. Or ask the question again in another way if you don't get the answer you were originally asking, Like you've done above.


When you twist a knob or move a slider on your controller, it sends a signal to your computer which because all of the software's controls have been mapped (eg, the software has been designed to read the signals you are sending in from a controller) it then changes whatever it is you have assigned.

So if you have virtual EQ knobs on some software in front of you.

The clever people who have designed the software allow you to hook up a midi device to your computer. And whenever you move or press anything on your computer it sends a signal across to tell your computer that you are changing switching button A or sliding fader 2 etc..

Hope that makes sense.

If you're asking for more detail on what is sent across by the midi controller, all i'd say is 1's and 0's. As i haven't a clue!

thanks man! yeah the fact that I know absolutely nothing about midi-controllers and software means that I didnt know exactly what questions to ask.... thus why i kept re-asking questions. Problem is too many people start jumping on you right away if you dont know what your talking about.

They did answer the questions 'a little too well' which is why I didnt understand what they were saying.

For those that use just a midi-controller + software setup do you usually use the midi-controller just for Eq'ing or for Cue'ing, pitch bend, etc. as well?

The great thing about Midi is you can assign your buttons faders, whatever your midi controller has to nearly anything on screen.

When you buy X software you read the manual (or before you buy it) and find out exactly what functions are 'midi mappable' (i think is the phrase) then you can go mental assigning everything and anything or just one or two functions.
