Hardware design is reaching it's limitations in some areas and things are somewhat slowing down. I think if you have a decent machine now that can run crysis well, you should be set for a long time. I don't really see the point in planning too far ahead considering that the hardware you're purchasing now will be significantly cheaper in several years (when it might actually make a difference).

You're not making any sense. If you keep waiting to buy until parts are faster and cheaper you will never have a computer to use.

$700 for a computer that will run any game on the market full tilt is a deal. Like you said I will be able to run games released in the future for quite some time without having to buy another computer or upgrade.

You on the other hand cheaped out spent a few hundred less and can't run current generation games at full quality.

I'm running anything but crysis on high settings. Of course, at the time I could've spent 400-500$ purchasing 2x 8800gt instead of a single 8600gt for 120$, but there has yet to be a game that demands it, and now the price of the 8800gt has significantly dropped. If a game came out that demanded them, I could just buy them then and I wouldn't have lost anything from not buying them over a year ago and spending all that money for nothing.
