-- Keffiyeh: a new fashion trend???

people can interpret it however they want, its a piece of clothing and the black and white and red and white patterns are commonplace in the middle east. its only when a westerner wears it that any political affiliation is attached to it.

youre also giving the average hipster fashionista way too much credit by saying that there is anything other than aesthetics involved with their choice of accessory.

It's as much a "fashion" for them as the blue and red bandanas are for the Crips and Bloods. It's worn specifically to denote an affiliation with Hamas/Fatah.

Although these are just the specific black-and-white and red-and-white ones - the keffiyeh itself has been around a lot longer than Palestine. But most people who wear it are wearing the B&W ones.

Reminds me of Homer Simpson picking up the Rastafarian hat at Lollapalooza. Just because you don't know what statement you're making doesn't mean you aren't making one. I admit it's not quite as douchey as those Chinese letters that actually spell "General Tso Chicken" when translated, it's not totally obvious that it has a different meaning, but nevertheless, it is not standard-issue all across the middle east as some people would like to believe.

Those things became popular in Europe some time ago already (at least 2 if not 3 years). I'm surprised it's taken this long to hit NA.

I have a couple of them from Morocco, and I like them a lot! Funnily enough, I also paint my nails black lol Guess that makes me emo... although I draw the line at those ridiculously tight jeans.

I was unaware that goods at H&M came with history-booklets attached to them that I should read before wearing.

Quite frankly, I just tossed all of the Keffiyeh's into the "Hipsters wearing scarves in the summer" trend and had no idea that there was anything to do with it being a Keffiyeh.

I didn't know what a Keffiyeh was until I saw a similar "wtf is up with kids wearing Keffiyeh's?" post somewhere else and typed it into google image search. I bet 99.9% of the kids wearing them are also thinking the same.

Posted by Jben on Oct-15-2008 03:08:

Sooo last year I thought about getting one until I realized everyone and their grandmother was wearing them, I still like them but the trend shall soon pass.

Actually thinking more about this I believe I first saw Kanye West wearing it in the ""can't tell me nothing" video, correct me if I'm wrong.

yeah.

'Queen Street art fag' is still my preferred term of affection for the hipsters (and yes I lump the str8 folks into that as well, lol).

the gays have been all over this for a while now too. yuck. the flamboyant, trendy gays can pull it off, I guess...but pairing it with ripped-jeans and a dirty t-shirt is just tragic.

lol thanks for a laugh
it does seem that all those fashion victims are primarily located on Queen Street W.

I give certain 'groups' a hard time, but it is typically in harmless fun

I truly do *love* living in a city with such diversity and 'sub-cultures'. Imagine how less interesting it would be here without it!

I wear one sometimes...another thing that tripped me out is that shitloades of women have been rocking a Corno...earrings, necklaces, belts, charms on bracelets...its weird growing up some kids who didn't know what it was gave me grief for wearing a "pepper" or having a raccoons dick on my chain....now its apparently high fashion for all ethnicities and genders.....

It's mind blowing how popular things like the mentioned in this thread become...muslims rocking crucifixes, christians wearing stars of david and mostly ALL for the wrong reason...

Posted by Frenchie on Oct-15-2008 19:58:

When I was younger I saw so many people wearing that as necklaces that I thought it was a charm for the Taurus zodiac sign.
