What exactly is an illegal gig? lol

A rave, in something like a warehouse or abandoned property or open space. Basically an event that does not have a permit.

Don't know the rules in the USA that well, but in the UK, you can get round some of the venue/permit issues by making it a members only party - i.e. tickets/invites cannot be bought on the door and have to be arranged in advance.

Technically this is a private party, so not governed by the strict rules that clubs have to adhere to. Can be a clever way to get you party off the ground without huge expense, especially as you know who is going to come in advance.

I've been involved with events in London that were on boats or small venues - no need for doormen (the venue manager controlled this) and drinks were also provided by the venue at reasonable costs. It really is an effective way to get a following, also because if you do it right, your people think they are on to a secret party and will give your whole promotion a buzz.

One of the problems I encountered with my first residency a few years ago was that I had built up a following (somewhat small) of friends and friends of friends etc. But friends would start expecting me to get them through the door every week for free, meaning that us DJs ended up getting payed less and found it hard to get these people to come each week to really support the night/club. Mabey my friends were just tight asses coz it was only a small entry fee of $5 over here, not much really to show some support.
Later on I started my own outdoor parties once a year that I put on for free, these were quite succesful in the sense that a lot more people came to the party and had a great atmosphere. I really learned a lot from this and enjoyed putting these one off parties on more than my weekly residency even though I didn't make back the money I'd put into it. I could have started selling tickets to these parties after the first couple but have had a few other issues to deal with taking up a lot of my time. I have recently moved interstate and am thinking about starting another similar party where I'm at now.
I really dislike a lot of the politics you get with clubs.

I agree the best way to do it is start a clubnight.
Also the scene is big where you live you have to look further

Im def not missing PUSH on the 29 I've been plannin it for a while now
But this is a rare expception, because the VAST majority of the parties people talk about in NYTA forums are 21+.

One thing I recommend is if you are after club gigs, make sure your demo CD is the very best you can do (I know that's kind of a no brainer) - but also make sure it looks the part.

I made mine last month, proper printed covers and Picture disc and the lot and have only had time to hand it into one club at the moment because I'm so busy with work. Basically went and spoke to the DJ's, introduced myself to the owner - gave him a copy of the CD and he called me back 2 days later asking me to do a 2 hour trial set which I did a few weeks ago and now I DJ at the club every friday night from 10 pm - 2 am.

One of the first things they mentioned to me was that I can get 10 people on the door list for free and 10 drink cards a night, so to the person who posted about the importance of bringing friends along for their business - I totally agree.

Also to the person who said get to know your fellow DJ's, after I finished at 2 AM on the Friday just passed, I ended up hanging around having some drinks (because I had a shitload of drink cards and about 10 friends there). Ended up staying till close (6 am) and got to know the closing DJ pretty well who played after me who DJ's at two other clubs and is helping me out with some extra residencies. So I totally agree with getting to know the promoters/DJ's around you and slowly working your way in. Do your very best on your demo CD, be confident in yourself but not too cocky

I'm still on my training wheels working my way in but just filling you in on my experiences recently

yeah sadly we're looked down upon in the area. pacha/wh run 19+ events which is really annoying -- what's the difference between 18 and 19??

good for you dude, but sounds like you lucked out a bit too.

every city varies too. it's harder to get a gig in some cities than others. man. trying to get a decent gig in toronto is like pulling your teeth and selling your son

thank goodness for friends

ps: if you suck, keep practicing. i wouldn't go out handing out demo cds until you're decent. because trainwrecking constantly gets you laughed at. don't get discouraged. keep practicing!
