Just like Graham said, it's your tuition money that is being thrown away.

I pretty sure you are aware that they won't be making up any missed class time.

And since its getting pretty close to exam time, i'm sure you don't want to miss to much class time.

If it lasts for a week, you're right, no make up time. If it goes on longer (if you read the Senate policies), they have to start rescheduling things. For the moment I could certainly use the week to play a bit of catch up.

In general I realize this could be detrimental, I'm not closing my eyes to that. If the strike goes on for an extended period of time (i.e. the length of last time) - one of the options *WILL* be getting the tuition fees back (AFAIK anyways). We'll see what happens, personally I was just looking for the moment to play catchup though.

I say we blame the TTC for this one.

Well if it goes that long, i wouldn't be worried about tuition.

I'd be worried because you won't be getting you're credits and will have to be in school for even longer.

There is nothing that will compensate your semester that is lost.

I definitely hear the issue, but I'm keeping myself busy regardless (actually, about to head off to work). As a result, I'm not terribly concerned.

I have many things to be doing and typically don't organize my time well enough to do everything I'd like to be, so this will (hopefully) give me a chance to sort things out.

I feel bad for the international students
At least I get to head back home today and I have somewhere to stay and the option to work during the strike.
They literally have just the campus, whose services are going to be reduced during the strike. No work permits. And their plans to go back home for the summer will be royally fucked if the semester extends into May.

I am honestly very upset about this. I have no idea why but I'm actually sad. I'm trying to laugh it off but I keep feeling like my education is being taken from me communism-style.

At least you're at Glendon.

It's going to be one HUGE party in Wood Residence tonight...

You should've seen what it was like during the blackouts we would have. Party central

This our xmas tree that we 'found' in the back of Wood Residence and decorated it in the middle of B-House on the main floor.

I'd say you blame these greedy TAs who think they can demand to make their own schedules, get 7% pay increases and get $2000 bonuses when everyone else is worried about just keeping their job.

I'm no longer a student but this whole dispute infuriates me.

I have an inside source who tells me that unless something drastic happens within the next 48 hours, the chances of a resolution in the near future are slim.

Is your source Jesus as well?

I spoke with him and he told me the same thing.

I spoke with my pet rock and it told me the same thing.

i can't believe this strike has not been resolved yet!!! 2+ months!!! Unbelievable.

I haven't gone through this thread and it was probably mentioned...

But if not, I think there is a class action law suit emerging... search 'class action lawsuit york' on facebook (groups).

This is so brutal... Sorry fellow York U students... as a university student myself, I can't imagine how shitty this must be, ugh!

I feel really bad for the students. I went through the same thing at York my first semester. The strike ended and the teachers basically said "don't worry about the work, just do what's left of the semester and we'll call it even". Never mind that I kinda actually wanted to gain some knowledge. It left such a bad taste in my mouth about what an education means in this country, or atleast at York and with regard to my program, history, that I decided not to go back and waste my money. I have no regrets. Well, one, I didn't end up banging any hot chicks in the library. Good luck to them.

great news for York U students.. now let's just hope the union doesn't challenge the ruling in court ..

McGuinty recalls legislature to end York University strike

Premier advised by government-appointed mediator there's 'no reasonable prospect' for a negotiated settlement

Back-to-work legislation will be introduced tomorrow to bring an end to the York University strike.

This morning, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said in a statement he will recall the Legislature at 1 p.m. tomorrow to introduce the legislation.

"I am asking MPPs from all parties to provide unanimous consent for immediate passage of the bill so that students can get back to school this week," he said. The premier will hold a news conference at mid-day today.

Earlier this week, McGuinty appointed labour mediator Reg Pearson to "bang a few heads together" and come up with a solution one of the longest strikes in York's history. The strike shut down the York campus on Nov. 6, when 3,400 teaching assistants, contract faculty and graduate assistants walked off the job.

"Earlier today I was advised by Mr. Pearson that there is no reasonable prospect of a negotiated settlement between York University and CUPE Local 3903," McGuinty said. "The sides are in a clear deadlock, and despite our best efforts to bring the sides together, that has not changed."

On Thursday the union made a counter-offer the day after Pearson was appointed. It was the fifth "significant" counter offer made since the strike began, Tyler Shipley, spokesperson for Canadian Union of Public Employees 3903, previously told the Star.

The key issues the two sides differed on are job security for professors on short-term contracts, full-time openings for part-time faculty, length of contracts and better funding for grad students.

However, in these challenging economic times, delaying the education of 45,000 people is simply no longer an option, McGuinty added.

I don't see how they can recover the year now. This has majorly screwed York's reputation permanently.

And think about how this will affect all new students. Third year collaborative BScN students like myself are gonna fucked with over capacity classes. Yay.

edit: Wait...so does this mean I'm not going to be able to take courses this summer?? I really wanted to take stats and a couple other things. :/

it is beyond ridiculous
sucks that the students cannot even seek any sort of compensation - no law firm has yet to take on the class action suit the students are trying to file.. they cannot sue CUPE, and York either - York is technically NOT refusing to provide the service (education), it is just delaying it
