-- PC run amok - How the Toronto School Board Sterilized Hallowe'en

"Halloween is all about kids from all cultures and faiths dressing up and having fun. The TDSB appears to be basing its policy paper more on phantom concerns than quantifiable complaints."

that parting sentence by the writer is perfect.

if legit complaints were received, obviously the board would be required to address them (and I agree with a previous post suggesting an 'opt out' policy).

now if complaints have NOT been received, I'd like an investigation into the spending habits of the board, because a room full of people otherwise have been paid to pre-emptively come up with this policy? the mismanagement of funds by school/board officials continues?

Some good points brought up in this thread. I've always wondered why mentions of Ramadan, Rosh Hashanah, etc are ok in places like schools, but Christmas and Halloween are not. Kind of backward don't you think?

One that really got me mad is my elementary school, which is a CATHOLIC school, recently did away with the Christmas concert which has been going on for decades. Their reason: they didn't want to offend anybody.

In the case of schools, I think some of these school administrators need to grow some balls and draw a line in the sand.

This "Black and Orange Day" business is absolutely ridiculous.

YES! "Ridiculous" is the word that first comes to my mind. Very sad, too.

Can you imagine if at a TO Jewish school they decided to do away with some Jewish specific concert... a) it would never happen, and b) if some TRIED to make it happen i guarantee there'd be outrage and prolly claims of discrimination or oppression of beliefs or something intense like that.

Who honestly believed that the "separation of church and state" zealots wouldn't eventually set their crosshairs on Halloween?

No kid talks like this... this should not be in quotes. Unless the child was brainwashed...

that was actually the writter sarcasticly agreeing with "reason #2" of 6 reasons the Toronto District School Board Classrooms thinks halloween isn't fun anymore...

the reason...
quote:
1. Halloween is a religious day of significance for Wiccans and therefore should be treated respectfully.

then the writter arguing, mocking, or agreeing with sarcasticly below...
quote:
According to Kurt MacIntosh, the TDSBs supervising principal of equity and inner city, nobody knows how many students of the Wiccan faith attend Toronto schools. Nor have complaints been quantified.

Actually, the origins of Halloween do trace back to Religious roots. That said, this also gets a big 'wtf?!' from me.

If anything, one of the great things about Canada is the fact we are a very multi-cultural society - and as such, I think our schools should embrace and celebrate many of the cultural events that happen throughout the year. Not only as a way of showing respect to those events, but also as a great opportunity to educate the students about the cultures that they originate from.

Instead of banning Halloween and calling it "Black and Orange day", why not celebrate it - but also teach the kids the history and roots of it? Explain how other cultures celebrate it, ie: Day of the Dead in Mexico

Many cultures have similar festivals, or festivals at the same time of year. Didn't Diwali just happen? Why not around this time of year - also educate kids about Diwali, there is a large enough Indian population in the city that I'm sure many kids would appreciate their beliefs being talked about, and also a way to educate non-Indian children about it.

Obviously you cant celebrate every holiday/festival from every Religion, or nothing would ever get done and some discretion will be needed. But really, this "Ban everything for fear of offending other people" well, offends me. PC sucks.

...what he said.
