How about just make the seats bigger or have a few extra large seats for the larger passengers. edit: you of all people should have some sympathy |
Doubt it'll increase cost. Most flights aren't full.

Still, I have to pay extra if my luggage is a few kilos too heavy, yet they get a free seat if their ass is 40 kilos too heavy.

| Originally posted by ******** That is preposterous. Perhaps I deserve to have a whole plane cause I'm a flight risk? If you are too fat to fit in the doors you shouldn't be on the plane. The seats are made for one people, it simply isn't safe for people to not fit in the seat.. what happens during a crash? Can the safety devices deploy? |

| Originally posted by Moral Hazard Of course there would be an increase in costs to other passengers. Unlike the two seat travelers the air lines are not going to simply eat this. Think about it... one of the major costs to air lines is fuel. The amount of weight in a plane impacts how much fuel is required to fly it a given distance. If you have a passenger who ways twice as much as the average passenger then that person requires twice as much fuel to get to the destination then does the average passenger. So, just by being fat the fat passenger hurts the airline's bottom line. Now add to this that fatty gets to take up two seats (one for free) thereby lowering the amount of paying passengers the airline get revenue from and you've now hurt the revenue line as well as the expenses... this means decreased profits for the airlines... since airlines run on exceedingly tight profit margins they cannot absorb this hit; rather, they will adjust their prices so that the loss in revenues and increase in expenses they suffer because of this ruling will be covered by those increased prices. Sure... they won't make an announcement at the gate that everyone has to cough up an extra $7 dollars because a passenger just got brought through security by a forklift but they will raise the prices across the board. edit... yeah, I was fat; however, I never required two fuckin' seats on an airplane... and if I did I wouldn't have thought that everyone else should pay extra because I can't shoehorn into a seat. |

| Originally posted by Fledz Sympathy? Are you kidding me? More often than not it's their own fault for being so damn obese. A minority of them have a clinical or genetic condition which means that their metabolism is weak. That's fair enough and I have no problems with those people. However, the other majority who are just too lazy to exercise and have no self control when it comes to eating, why the hell should we have to subsidise their poor life choices? I'm all for my taxes and anything else helping out with healthcare, but this is not health care. It's us normal people needing to compromise our lives and our beliefs for these slobs who are unwilling to do something about being fat. Please. There is NOTHING beneficial about being obese. It is a health risk so why is modern society making it out to be acceptable? It is not acceptable. It puts a strain on the health system, on relationships, on every day lives, on transport and on numerous other things. Obesity has become a world wide epidemic which is absolutely disgraceful when there are millions of people around the world who can't even get enough food to survive. |
