backup your music, papers, etc. and reinstall Windows. (it will take about 30 minutes, then you have a fresh clean fast install)

if you want me to find a guide or something let me know.

I'm surprised that some smart fucker hasn't posted "Buy a Mac" yet.

What are Macs particularly good for? I wouldn't spend $2000 to buy a Mac when a $600 PC can do the exact same things.

I would only recommend a Mac to someone doing video editing, personally. Even then, a PC with the right components can do just as well. Same goes with music production.

Macs have less virii (?) written for them though, so there's usually at least one smart prick in threads like these piping up to mention that they've never really had that problem

my computer seems to be infected with some sort of spyware. if i do a google search and click on a link, a new window will open and direct me to a suspicious looking URL rather than the actual site i'm trying to visit. this happens both in IE and Firefox.

my spyware removal programs won't let me update before i run a scan, and anytime i try to open a URL for a spyware removal program, the page cannot be found.

what do i do?

my friend just had this problem.right down to the redirecting url bug.heres what i did to fix his...

download IEfix- this program works well in going after the virus that infects and forces internet explorer to redirect.it should knock it off your firefox as well

download SmitFraudFix -its a win32 virus destroyer

download spybot search and destroy and or spyware doctor 6.0.(i prefer spyware doctor although id run both programs then keep spyware doctor permanently on.pm me on spyware doctor ill fill you in on it.

now disconnect your internet connection and run all those programs in safemode:

also hit "control alt delete" and then check your tasklist.that way you can discover what name these viruses go by.simply write down the name of the file first and then and click "end process".if you see the virus icon dissapear at the bottom of your toolbar(you may have to wave the mouse over the icon for it to go away) go do a search of that name on your computer and delete the file.

it might sound like a lot but its pretty simple stuff.of course do all this at your own risk but if your computers messed up anyway how much do you really have to lose? good luck on it i know ive battles a few viruses this year, all on friends computers.the redirect one was actually the easiest to defeat.

That's because mac users don't know how to access the internet.

it was the first response i got from my friend who i was talking to on messenger while i was trying to fix the problem last night.

i'll probably end up doing a reformat just to be safe, even though i just did one not that long ago.

is there a good program that i can run to prevent spyware and viruses from being installed that is 1) free, and 2) will not slow my computer down considerably?

Posted by LeopoldStotch on Nov-25-2008 16:22:

most popular one it seems everyone is using is AVG. it's pretty quick imo.

but yeah i think you should post your hijackthis log before going towards the reformat path. i don't know about you guys, but i tend to hate doing it. reinstalling the OS is easy, but I do depend on a lot of applications, and it takes awhile for me to install them.

i could ghost it, but that's another story for me.

Posted by lcid on Nov-25-2008 16:51:

yeah, i couldn't even get Hijack This to install...

reformatting this week won't be too much of a hassle considering i just switched to a new computer at work so i've already got a list and install files for all the programs i use. luckily i don't have too many big programs that i depend on other than CS3.

Use Kaspersky AntiVirus trial version and it will find all the spyware that you have on your computer. 98% of other anti spyware never find shit.
kaspersky >*

after that install ccleaner (free) and always clean your system with it

2 of the worst suggestions ever.

For spyware, use SpyBot because it has a feature that you can turn on for registry monitoring, etc. It is called "TeaTimer" in the options.

For Anti-Virus, if you are ok spending $30 get NOD32. It is THE best, and doesn't slow your computer down really at all. Otherwise AVG.

Also, someone recommended checking the hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) in notepad and make sure there is nothing but a 127.0.0.1 address in there. Also, open task manager and post all the listed processes.

how is that the worst suggestion?
you're suggesting to use spybot which is fucking horrible imo, it never finds specific types of malware. kaspersky has always eliminated all small types of mallware that cause popups and play random sounds in your bg if you are already infected plus it does not use up your memory at all.

as for ccleaner i don't get your beef with it, you sounds like you never even used it. Best sofware to clean up your computer and have it perform better.

you have to be a complete moron to spend 30bucks for antivirus software. Use trial, delete spyware, delete trial.

I have seen CCleaner and the lot of those types of programs do more damage. They are shit. Avoid them.

And as for the pay thing, I don't act like I am anyone that matters, but I also am not going to say "get this software illegally from here" on this board. I am sure she knows where to find it.

And Kapersky is a piece of shit. It was pretty low on the list of actual cleaned infections of many things.

Furthermore, I would never say use just ONE spyware/adware remover. It is best to run Ad-Aware with SpyBot. This works best.

Posted by tctitan on Nov-25-2008 21:36:

a bunch of our users experienced something similar where malwarebytes (normally always effective) wouldnt run. this program seemed to take care of all of them: http://www.simplysup.com/

well before bashing it how about you try it first and see how much damage it does not do, it's very good software and ive used it for over 3 years.

kaspersky is known to be one of the best av software including malmare and spyware removal, again how about you try it before talking smack. I've tried all if not most spyware removal programs in the last 6-7 years and they are absolutely worthless, the only find the most known spyware trojans, kaspersky is updated almost daily.
The only other good software for finding uknown processes running in the system is HijackThis.

i disagree w/the ccleaner comment. i use it almost daily & have it installed it on hundreds of machines. in fact i always run it b4 a malwarebytes scan in order to clean out junk files/folders & the registry. not only that it has a Startup group list which is very handy to see everything that is loading w/Windows.

Updated daily lol that's a feature you tout? Fucking idiots. They are all updated daily as necessary. NOD32, Symantec, McCaffee, etc. Shut up already.

And those "performance enhancement" apps are all shit. Do your homework. They create more problems than they help. ugh it is people like you that perpetuate stupid bullshit.

www.sysinternals.com has WAY better stuff than that. CCleaner is a piece of shit as is all of those types.
