Security and proper lining/gating material works for crowds of thousands at sporting events and concerts. Why is this any different?

Proper preperation, prevention, and security could have prevented this from happening: crazed American shoppers or not.

well it works at the guv on any given night for example
get some security to organize the lineup, in the pictures it looks like shitload of people just rushed into the store

Wal-Mart management should have put up security barriers, called in the police or hired some kind of security company. Also, they knew the crowd was large and crazy, so they should have pulled the workers back to a safer place. It doesn't mention it in the article but I wouldn't be surprised if that employee was there because he HAD to be. Its not like it was a flash mob or anything, management saw this coming from a mile away.

There aren't a lot of details yet, but CNN and ABC-affiliate KESQ are saying that in Palm Desert, California, there was a shooting that resulted from an altercation between two teenage girls inside a Toys R Us. The shop was inundated with Black Friday shoppers at the time, and when the girls were arguing, it seems, a male teenager began shooting. Someone was hit, though it's not clear who. The boy, a juvenile, was detained. Everyone was evacuted from the store, and things are under control now, says CNN.

This is insane. I can't believe that material objects mean so much to people that it's worth it to kill/harm someone. What the hell is wrong with people!

When are people going to realize you can do your shopping online.. that means no going anywhere.. sit naked at your computer and wait for it to come to you.

I think we should shut shopping malls and walmarts down.. turn them into homeless shelters..or recreation center's or a hangout for youths..

just my opinion!

Haha the only problem with that is that most (females) don't like buying things without trying them on first.

what time are the stores open till in the States tonight?
I'm driving to Buffalo at 7pm, do you think there will be lots of Canadians trying to cross the border to do some shopping at that time?

Likely the stores will still be open, yes. And yes, there will lots of Canucks hopping the border.

However most of the deals are just door crashers so by that time in the evening, nothing will really be left in the type of "Black Friday" sale.

OK, Black Friday has officially gotten out of hand. A 34-year-old WalMart employee was trying to hold back the crowds at a Long Island store this morning at 5am, when they took the doors off their hinges and stormed the store. The man fell down and was trampled by over 200 people as he gasped for air. It's sad and despicable, and it's equally the fault of the dehumanized shoppers and the WalMart store it happened at.

Why was there no line set up? Why didn't they let in a reasonable amount of people at a time? What kind of method is it to just allow hundreds of people to cram up against the doors, waiting for them to open? They may have wanted some photo op of people surging through the doors, but they willfully created a very dangerous situation.

Can you imagine if, say, the Apple store did this when the iPhone was launched? Or when the Wii was launched? When a large amount of people are expected for a retail event, organization is needed, otherwise it creates a dangerous situation. This man's death is on WalMart's hands.

As for the people who did the trampling, well, I hope their cheap crap was worth it. They'll have to live with the human costs of their deals for the rest of their lives.

It's not Walmart, its Walmart's customers who created this. People buying an iPhone or Wii on the launch day are not the same as people looking to penny pinch on Black Friday. It's a different consumer entirely.

I guess walmart could have done more. What I expect is that they saw this year's madness as no different than last year's, and just set things up in the exact same way.

A lot of retail industry analysts were worried that black friday would lower key because of the general state of the economy and how the consumer has been hit thus far. All previous retail figures pointed to a weaker start to the holiday shopping. I guess what's happened is that Americans haven't given up their desire to spend - they're just more willing to fight for the deals. Sad.

There's a video on youtube of CPR being performed on the walmart employee. So sickening.

Posted by T_ALI on Nov-29-2008 01:59:

wow that's terrible

Posted by Jem_hadar on Nov-29-2008 03:21:

So, like, does anyone get charged?

I guess no one is (can be?) held responsible?

Wow. That REALLY sucks for that man's family and his close friends.

How brutal and disgusting.

Wow.
