i play the same way every time i play: with my heart, as if it were the last time i could play

the only problem with doing megamix/mashups is you don't learn to nail the phrasing right for when you do play out. this is why i also prefer mixing hip hop; because, although its more of a workout (scratching and mixing between songs more often), mixing in and out of songs in infinitely easier with hip hop (because all songs are structured the same).

Why can't you nail the phrasing right? I tend to drop a track on phrase and bring it up into the mix while riding the pitch to keep it in sync. I don't understand why mixing in quickly would keep you from phrasing properly.

oops...you're right...i was just thinking that if a song had 64 beats before its second break and the incoming track had 128 beats before its first break...you wouldn't get the incoming song to start before the track you are mixing goes into a break.

but then again, that doesn't matter...you just need to know your tracks.

And that's why they invented looping...

Or, conversely, you could just cue the track 64 beats in. In any case, it will work well for you.

Or, you could just start the second track 64 beats earlier.

yeah, i know that is an honest response. but, for me it was mostly a struggle to master the technicalities of djing. i remember i used to have tons of cds, with music i had downloaded illegally off the web, but my djing was terrible.

learn to count and read/identify tonalities, but yeah in general i agree go with your heart, acquaint yourself with the best people (from inside, not rep. wise) who are willing to guide you and always follow your instinct,

even when it tells you to 'stop djing' for a while.

use crappy players...youl be better for sure!!

you should check out ellaskins on youtube. he has quite a few useful vids for helping djs and practicing

I tend to just play. I mix in and out rapidly because EQing and phrasing are things I need to work on.

I'm at the point where not having a controller is incredibly frustrating, I wish I didn't have to save all this money for books next semester.

Whenever you do get the money, allow me to recommend the Vestax VCI-100. Awesome piece of equipment, and works wonderfully with Traktor. Not sure what software you're using though.

I just spin a set for the sake of spinning a set. I don't plan anything out unless I've had an idea for a transition, mash-up, etc. during the day. I'll start with a certain tune depending on my mood and/or what type of set I want to spin, then I will just go from there. Simple as.

Using Ableton at the moment. I've had my eyes on the Evolution UC-33e, it's definitely nothing amazing, but it's really cheap and it's pretty much just knobs, faders, and some function switches, so I figure that'd be something nice to start with.

This works well. Also, playing the same transition over and over and over and over again. Helps you get to know two tracks at once. You know how one will end and the other starts. Do this with a few reords of varying genres/sounds and you get a good head for how to do things regardless of track.

Also the zero pitch thing, just dropping in and pitching and mixing at the same time. Can be a life saver if you need it for real someday. I can ride the pitch on one track thats probably not even close to the same bpm but if you do it with the right instrumentation in the track you can mix in tracks with greatly different speeds and not have it sound too fucked.
