It's a good example of how countries decay into chaos, as they have done many times throughout history.

Basically you only need a certain amount of the population to believe what that fellow believes, that we have a right to torture because our enemies will for example, and a certain amount of the population to sit idly.

That's a very silly statement. Nationalism (real or imagined) gave us the modern state, which has remarkably led to the most pervasive state of peace in modern human history.

It's easy to hate on nationalism when you only acknowledge violent manifestations of identity.
