Yes, its sickening. After a few of such profile killings, its hard even for me to look at this indifferently. Pretty obvious that this murder was done by someone in the FSB (KGB), and not the Chechens, as on whom its usually blamed on - because Markelov worked hard for Chechen rights from Russian military crimes in the region.

Lack of response from Putin, lack of protection for these people, these and more only lead to Putin.

I am not defending Putin or Russia here. This is a shame, a stain, a senseless killing to protect one war criminal. Thats weak.

I'm very surprised at how the Russian economy has degenerated in the past three months. The accounts of the country STILL look better then those in the US. Unfortunately the memory of currency problems, and possibly an Anglo bias, seem to have really crushed the currency.

The media all over the world has been talking about how bad the US is. I think the reason you've not seen it yet is because the effects haven't quite worked through. My boss just got back from a trip in the North East and he was saying that there were suburbs with rows of for sale signs. Until the stock sitting on the market clears it's going to be tough to tell how bad things are going to be.

I understand the reason the Russians have imposed controls on NGOs but I agree they seem a bit draconian.

that's a good question. I have no clue. But aparantly, if you have Russian citizenship, and work for a Russian company that has offices in the U.S., even if you're in the U.S. at the time and do/say something the Kremlin deems as "dissent" or "treason" in their opinion, you're still toast.

I am very surprised that Western media hasnt attacked or linked Putin to this one. You see, when it was Politkovskaya - they did, but now they don't. I see it the other way around - Markelov was possibly murdered by someone in the Russian military, who are upset at Markelov's campaign to prosecute Russian troops [early release from prison]. While Politkovskaya was murdered by Kadyrov men. Because Politkovskaya's bulk of work was on Chechnya.

Politskovskaya was clearly murdered by Kadyrov, in my opinion. Every time someone in Russia criticizes him or Chechen government, they end up dead. I dont think that Russian agencies are doing Kadyrov's dirty work. They just don't want to do anything about it when someone turns up dead. Kremlin would not dare criticize Kadyrov - they might not like what he does, but to Moscow stability and control in Chechnya is priority over human lives, democracy and rights.

LOL, apparantly there is some sextape with this guy and he is trying to implement Sharia law.

so-branches of the FSB are still operating on foreign soil i guess(some Kadyrovites are the chechen branch of FSB). I knew this girl whose dad was "former KGB" in canada, and i always wondered if he was FSB...they had a nice house and shit but he was never around and i never found out what he did
