| Human rights lawyer, journalist killed in Moscow A Russian human rights lawyer renowned for his work on abuses in Chechnya was shot to death Monday by a masked gunman who followed him from a news conference, officials said. A young journalist who tried to intervene also was gunned down. The broad-daylight shootings of lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova prompted grief and outrage in a country where lawyers and journalists who challenge the official version of justice are frequently targeted. Markelov had fought the early release of a Russian colonel whose killing of a Chechen woman in 2000 put names and faces on the gruesome rights abuses in the war-wracked region. His death Monday angered many Chechens, already upset by the release of last week of the military officer. Colleagues drew comparisons with the 2006 killing of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya a client of Markelov's and a fellow enemy of rights abuses in Chechnya and across former President Vladimir Putin's Russia. Markelov, 34, was shot near a building where he had just held a news conference, about half a mile (1 kilometer) from the Kremlin, said Viktoria Tsyplenkova, a spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee of the Moscow prosecutor's office. Markelov was shot in the back of the head at close range by an attacker who followed him after the news conference, wore a stocking-style mask and had a silencer on his gun clear signs of a planned killing, state-run RIA-Novosti news agency reported, citing an unidentified law enforcement official. Police also reportedly said there were several witnesses. |

My wife's brother called her the other day asking how we are able to survive over here and if we would be living in the street soon (based on what he has been reading over there). lol. |

| Originally posted by The17sss look, that side note about certain words to be used or not used in Russian publications is besides the point. The thread is about Russia pushing legislation that will allow them to treat dissent (in the Kremlin's definition) as treason and deny the accused jury trials.... and the effects that could have on the election process and in regard to NGO's. Surely a Russian like yourself wouldn't consider that silly. |

| Originally posted by The17sss that's a good question. I have no clue. But aparantly, if you have Russian citizenship, and work for a Russian company that has offices in the U.S., even if you're in the U.S. at the time and do/say something the Kremlin deems as "dissent" or "treason" in their opinion, you're still toast. |
I am very surprised that Western media hasnt attacked or linked Putin to this one. You see, when it was Politkovskaya - they did, but now they don't. I see it the other way around - Markelov was possibly murdered by someone in the Russian military, who are upset at Markelov's campaign to prosecute Russian troops [early release from prison]. While Politkovskaya was murdered by Kadyrov men. Because Politkovskaya's bulk of work was on Chechnya.
Politskovskaya was clearly murdered by Kadyrov, in my opinion. Every time someone in Russia criticizes him or Chechen government, they end up dead. I dont think that Russian agencies are doing Kadyrov's dirty work. They just don't want to do anything about it when someone turns up dead. Kremlin would not dare criticize Kadyrov - they might not like what he does, but to Moscow stability and control in Chechnya is priority over human lives, democracy and rights.

Austrians hunt Chechen's killers
Human rights groups have urged the Austrian government to bring to justice the killers of a Chechen dissident who was shot dead on a Vienna street.
Umar Israilov, 27, was killed by two gunmen on Tuesday, Austrian media say.
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Memorial Human Rights Centre said the victim had told police in Austria that he was being followed.
Mr Israilov, a former Chechen rebel, had accused the Russian-backed Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov of torturing him.
Mr Israilov, a former bodyguard for Mr Kadyrov who later fled, filed a complaint against the Chechen president with the European Court of Human Rights in 2006.
Austrian police arrested a suspect on Tuesday near St Poelten, 80km (50 miles) west of Vienna, in connection with the shooting, local media report.
Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov
Ramzan Kadyrov has long been accused of human rights abuses
Leadership under suspicion
The campaign groups said it appeared to be another politically-motivated killing of a critic of high-level Russian government officials.
"In light of the brutal retaliation inflicted on those who speak out on abuses in Chechnya, Israilov's actions were particularly courageous, and his killers and those behind them need to be promptly held to account," said Oleg Orlov, director of the Memorial Human Rights Centre.
"We're familiar with the case, and find Israilov's torture allegations entirely credible," said Rachel Denber of US-based Human Rights Watch.
Last September, Ruslan Yamadayev, a member of a prominent Chechen family who had fallen out with Ramzan Kadyrov, was shot dead in Moscow. Mr Kadyrov denied any involvement.
kadyrov is a sad sad man.
fucking traitor for one, him and his father, spent the rest of their energy putting out the fires that they had so greatly helped spark.
hes become a mafia don, and even at times excercising power in other states.
reminds me of when the KDP of kurdistan with Barzani sold out to saddam to oust the PUK.
the Kremlin knows whats going on with the Kadyrovites, but it seems the most stable choice for them.
this ruling just gives him the greenlight to keep being shameless.
LOL, apparantly there is some sextape with this guy and he is trying to implement Sharia law.
so-branches of the FSB are still operating on foreign soil i guess(some Kadyrovites are the chechen branch of FSB). I knew this girl whose dad was "former KGB" in canada, and i always wondered if he was FSB...they had a nice house and shit but he was never around and i never found out what he did
