How could a Pope want the extermination of an entire people/population? It would be 100% contradictory to the "extreme" life stance the Catholic Church takes. By that I mean the anti-abortion, anti-death penalty, anti-war etc. (Unless of course it's a just war.)

Um... not to be a pest; however, wouldn't the Vatican be better described as an oligarchy, given that the Pope is elected by a group of elites (Cardinals)? If it were an absolute monarchy then the pope would simply name a successor.
