It was this...

It was a launch title for the Gamecube when it first hit the scene. The game was unanimously praised by critics for just about everything, from the production values, to the gorgeous visuals, to its Star Wars charm that fans of the franchise will really appreciate.

I never played it, but I saw it on display at a Best Buy, the game ran silky smooth at 60FPS, so the game really was a treat to the eyes. Many will say its among the best games on the system. Which unfortunately isn't saying too much since the Gamecube is widely considered to be one of the worst consoles in Nintendo's history, right behind the Virtual Boy. I mean, there were plenty of good games to be had, but the PS2 and Xbox manhandled it throughout pretty much its entire existence.

But the big N got to smile in the end since their Wii is now steamrolling every bit of competition in sight.

but did you play tie fighter?

There's just something so epic about chasing little fighters through constant flak fire while trying to dodge giant energy beams ten times the width of your own fighter as two capital ships fight it out with you inbetween, or attacking an ennemy destroyer, scaling along it's surface and poking at it with your little pew pew lasers, not realising that you're flying dangerousely close to an anti-cruiser beam, then suddenly the whole screen turns white and your subwoofer starts rumbling...

yeah, all that was awesome. i just found the battles to be too small to really knock tie fighter off its perch of best space sim of all time. i saw no reason why they couldn't have just increased the number of ships by three or four times...also the "soup" missions pissed me off.

you guys have me all pumped up now though, thinking of grabbing XvT: balance of power which apparently has a whole single-player campaign...

duh

X-wing and tie fighter were among the first PC games I've ever played. Tie fighter was epic, but I think FS2 was better.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jan-07-2009 00:29:

fair enough!

dont spose you played balance of power and can tell me whether its good or not?

Posted by Cpt.Cocaine on Jan-07-2009 00:33:

It's pretty decent. Not as good as XWA or tie fighter obviousely, but it's definately not bad. Also I remember it being hard. But then it's been ages since I've played it.

In any case it'll fulfill both your space sim fetish and your star wars fetish.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jan-07-2009 00:39:

excellent! i think i might have XvT floating around already.

if only i wasnt at work. i wanna go home and play!

I'd love to see space sims where it's not like, you are like a demi god and it's up to you to destroy entire wing of enemy fighters

something like it's frigging hard destroying one enemy fighter, but the mission goals do not rely on you taking out entire enemy fleet. meaning, having smart friendly AIs working with you to accomplish the objective

it's pretty good story. some annoying missions (esp last one where you have to take down the SSD) but worth spending few hours on

Ultima 7 (well, the whole series...)

Ultima Underworld (1 and 2)

Posted by Gen3r4l1ty on Jan-07-2009 01:15:

Also, Alone in the Dark 1 and 2... before the series was a joke.

Posted by Gen3r4l1ty on Jan-07-2009 01:21:

Sorry, last one...

Raptor: Call of the Shadows

And my favorite "6th grade computer-lab time-waster:" Sim Ant.

Posted by CONNERMAN2000 on Jan-07-2009 01:58:

Omega

Great mentions. Do you think there is a place where I could download at least a demo/shareware of that Rise of the Triad game? Sounds hilarious and awesome all at once.

Gen3r4l1ty

Sim Ant ftw! The dude with the lawnmower would always fuck my shit up, somehow...someway.

My good friend Google will probably work the magic for me on this one.

Also, can't believe I missed Raptor. What a great game. If I remember correctly, they included the demo to that and a few other games if you bought the full version of Duke Nukem 3D back in the day. Played the hell outta that sucker.

Posted by XaNaX on Jan-07-2009 12:07:

one of my favorite time wasters was nuclear war

and I also loved the first terminator game from 1990 I think, I had to upgrade my 286 so I could play it lol

only could find this one shit picture, i love any game where you can break into an armory and steal m60s and missile launchers. it was bad ass for the time

edit: found a bunch of screenshots HERE

omg, when I saw the topic of this thread I immediatly thought of "Crusader: No Regret", and "Crusader: No remorse", and the first thing I see is that others have said the same thing, fantastic.

I also need to add "Alone in the Dark", the first part, masterpiece. Also "Kingdom 'O Magic"

Rogue Leader was fucking amazing. I wasted an entire teenage summer on it. You owe it to yourself to pick that up used if you can find it, it plays soooooo fucking smooth on the GC and I'm hard-pressed to think of a title with more replayability other than standard Diablo, etc~

i dunno. i just assume there's a market because i know i want it, haha! freespace 2 came out in 1999 and that's been pretty much it as far as epic space combat games go. im sure the world is itching for a new one.

i'd like one where your performance affected the next mission(s) etc. in all seriousness, sometimes i have trouble getting to sleep coz my brain won't let go of the space sim its building in my head, lol. if i ever win lotto im gonna make this game

I want it as well, but im more of a pessimist on this one and i jsut figure people dont play games like that any more That saddens me.

Also over the years i filled the shelves that sit over my computer desk with several folders, eah one full of concept art, code bits and various other stuff that i hoped to make into a decent project but never did because i lost interest / lacked the time 7took on another project. There is a substantial folder there containing various ideas, art and code relating for a space sim i built in hy head over the years, and i promised myself that if i ever have enough free time to do so, and if i can find some people to come on board with the project i would really like to finish it. Infact, depending on how well i do at my current job, i might save up enough money in a couple of years to start my own little company with a few people and try to break into the gaming market. I know that this is quite a far fetched dream, but hey it might hapen.

ehhh.. it's been a while, tbh i only had the shareware back in the day this and marathon 2 were my favorite old school FPS
(though both made me motion sick if i played for too long)

anyone ever play these games?

Contraption Zack- a really interesting and quirky puzzle game

Pushover- another well done, creative puzzler

again, i HIGHLY recommend D/Generation (game i posted earlier) and this one- we used to play this in the library on these old school apple's back in elementary school

Zany Golf- yes, that is a bouncing hamburger

also, ever wonder where trauma center: under the knife for the DS got its gameplay ideas from?

Life and Death 2: the Brain
