Energy man, energy. not funny faces.

You definately come from the Tiesto and AVB world of DJing

If the music isn't enough to get your energy going then you are listening to the wrong music for you.

you want him to throw batteries at you?

i'm guessing you are pretty new to all this stuff aren't you?

Wow... okay...

1) Ok I guess I agree with you Aaron - Porter should be kept to a 2-3 hour set, but maybe saved for last... As already mentioned, how can one continue the momentum after a Porter set.

2) The Evan G/Crowd Interaction/Opener 'debate'

Crowd interaction comes in a variety of forms. I do not expect a dj to be smiling from ear to ear all night, or dancing around all night, etc... But anyone who was there can agree with me... Evan G showed no crowed interaction. He kept his head tilted at the same angle, his eyes looked half closed, the only time he moved was too look for a CD or take a drink. My main complaint is he never made a connection with the dance floor. He never looked up. I think his skill level would improve if he would bother to read the crowd and aim to please. If this was an international dj performing people would not be pleased.

IMO a live DJ does not just mix music... thats what radio shows or albums are for. Interaction is necessary. ESPECIALLY in venues such as footwork or the gallery where it is a more up close and personal set up - interaction is KEY. I do watch the DJ. I want to know he is having a good time. I feed of his energy.... and I know I am not the only one.

As for the whole 'Evan G was opening therefore his set should be slower arguement'... Aleksandra's set had more momentum (Im not talking about the 'banging factor') than Evan Gs, and a night should not go backwards. In my opinion Evan G should have acted as a bridge between the two DJs. Picking up the pace (just a bit), but by the time Porter took over most people should already be having fun. My favourite transitions are when you dont even notice. This was like night and day.

The city has MANY talented DJs. I think footwork should consider someone else next time Porter is booked.

not true i come from a chill house background. Anything can get me to dance but if im going to spend money at some club i expect to be entertained. If that was the case we would all just have house parties and put on mixed cds. The dj feels the room, plays and entertains you.

The DJs job is to play music for you....there are many clubs where you can't even see the DJs....heck Guv was like that for a long time.

Between the music, your friends and the club vibe you should be able to find all the energy you need to be dancing your ass off. To be able to see the DJ does very little for me and my enjoyment of the night.

Posted by elFreak on Jan-12-2009 18:48:

when you guys get a little more experience at parties you will realize that a dj shooting epic plur out of his fingertips while recreating the crucifixion of christ during an epic buildup is not needed to bring energy to a crowd. Until then you might be satisfied by mouse heads and sick lazz0rs!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111oneoneoneoneeleventeen.

I disagree i think interaction with the crowd is a big thing.

you will grow out of it eventually...everyone is noob once upon a time.

+1

Crowd interaction isn't a factor for me anymore...watching Digweed destroy koolhaus with pretty much 0 interaction = amazing.

I don't know....way back when....I remember having a great time partying my ass off at System to Deko-ze sets.....it wasn't until about the fourth or fifth time I saw him that I even knew he was black. He's definately a DJ that interacts with the crowd but I didn't find it made my energy level any higher or his set any better when I would actually see him spinning.

I was waiting for you to disagree with me again. Cant wait till the next post I do. . I know you would think a djs only job is to mix music. The 3 times I have seen you were the worst audience interaction I have ever seen with a dj (your myspace says"Yohan also loves to interact with the crowd, bringing a stage presence unhindered by restraints of social expectations and only full of love of music"). lol What interaction? What stage presence? I think I saw you look up at us maybe twice in the whole night. But you did stop the music and scream like a girl . With no one screaming back of course because that was the only energy you gave us the whole night. You played amazing music and I do agree you have a love for music but you didn't do anything for the energy in the room and thus made people leave into rev.

my myspace needs updating lol

there were days when i thought crowd interaction was one of the important things about djing.

then i saw DJs like steve aoki and mark eg who makes a living being a clown and cant deliver good music. i cringe whenever armin does a jesus pose and crowd go mad.
that's gimmick. not djing.

not that i think zero crowd interaction is a good thing, and some sort of interaction is necessary (mainly reading the crowd and adjusting the set accordingly)

but to slam djs for failing to put on a show. meh

i guess djs like digweed and pvd suck too. or countless other djs who might clap once in a while but puts on one helluva set

ps: i have fun whenever i'm on decks. but shy introvert kid has trouble expressing himself to other people, let alone trying to concentrate on djing and not screwing up
