I fail to see the problem. When I learnt to speak my native language (namely, Portuguese), I don't think I had anyone tell me how it worked. If anything, comparing this new language to your native one will just make everything more difficult for you.

I learnt some German that way, and after a couple of months, I knew a lot more than I thought I could ever learn in such a short period of time. And, the best of all, I didn't have to "think" before saying anything.

That last sentence is the key to learning any language successfully. I only know Spanish (native) and English, but I really don't have to think in Spanish and then mentally translate. I pretty much think in English whenever I'm speaking/reading/writing. I find that people that are unable to do this are the ones that have the most trouble getting their thoughts across when speaking or writing another language other than their native tongue.

I heard it was stupid, it just says the word in the language you're trying to learn, with 4 pictures, and you have to pick the picture. You haven't learned the language yet, how are you supposed to know what it is?

If you fail to see the value in this, you fail understanding the mechanics of learning a language. Word association is how learn a language. Whether it is associating a picture, the word in your native tongue, or some acronym, you're still doing word association. This is the way that Rosetta Stone teaches.

I think this program has its good points in the word association category, but in my opinion, I think it fails greatly in that it does not teach you the understanding of pronouns and conjugation early. For me, these are things that are very important because I want to be able to form a sentence and practice that stuff pretty early on.

Also, I agree with woscar and Lira that you need to be able to not "think" when using the other language to be fluent and speak it well.
