to take this random tangent even further...

Is there any kind of tradition or reasoning behind how Asian people 'pick' a western name after moving to an English speaking country or do they literally pick whatever name they like?

some of the names seem 'dated'. I've had clients (young ones) end up with names like "Constance", "Dorothy", "Arthur", etc. and I wonder how they chose them. Nothing at all wrong with those names, of course...just a little odd and I wonder how they come by them.

My favourite was a volunteer working at my place of work:

First name: Peter (real first name unknown)
Last name: Pan (real last name)

I didn't have the heart to tell him.

how about all those asians - Vincent, Edward, Richard, Marlon (you don't get many of those in white families, lol)

What, seriously? Vince is a huge name with Italians, I know at least three Ed/Eddies and a bunch of Richards, all white... Marlon, yeah, that's pretty out there, but where on earth did you hear that one?

last name "Day"
