Listen to her, I work in a big company (26000+) and there was two waves of staff cuts, in our division it was total of 200 out of 3000+ people.

From all the people i know who got cut, all of them were "dead wood", underperforming and having an attitude...

So if you're known to have an attitude at work, or not being busy, be scared... very scared.

nice! was it the one you we're telling me about earlier?

We just hired I think 2 or 3 more people... all senior-ish level positions though. No need for grunt work because they just get me to wave my magic engineer's wand and have it done automatically.

Seriously though, there are good industries to be in right now and there are bad ones. Financial services (other than insurance) is definitely a bad one. So is real estate. Essential services like food, utilities, health care, telcos, etc. are doing A-OK, as are industries that are directly related. Now's not a bad time to be in the booze sector either; layoffs -> boredom -> depression -> drinking.

I suppose I am known to have an attitude at work, similar to the attitude I have everywhere else; I have an attitude because I work hard, perform exceptionally well, and have little patience for those who put in a half-assed effort and expect me to cover for them or help dig them out of their holes. If you piss away more than a half hour a day on Facebook or TA then yeah, I'd be pretty friggin' worried, but I can't agree with the recommendation that everybody quietly take it up the chute and become a mindless cog until the recession is over. No matter what the job, no matter what the economy, assertiveness is an important part of competence.

I bet job placement agencies are bombarded with applications... or even Workopolis and Monster.ca
Makes me wonder what the unemployment rate is thus far...

It was announced today that the company I work for was named one of the world's top 100 sustainable corporations at the World Economic Forum in switzerland. One of only 5 Canadian corporations, and one of only 16 in the financial services industry to make the cut.

*phew*

All the layoffs at my work happened within the last year. But my department is generally good because its hard to find people to fill in positions.

But the same thing is happening at my moms work. If your work is laying people off not because of salary or because of seniority, then they must be screwing around. But I wouldn't worry too much, although if you think you might be in danger, update the resume and check other options and don't tell anyone what you are doing. Just test the waters and see whats out there. There's always EI by the way!

So generally I would agree with this, but I don't think now is the time to be cocky either. People who can encourage even the underperformers to work as a team will be seen favorably no matter what.

I don't know what kind of company you work for, but even if you are performing well, being cocky vs. collaborative isn't really ever appreciated.

I've seen two people (in my team of nine) be laid off, and one left prior to that on his own. My company will be laying off 131 out of a total workforce of 318 salaried employees, and 78 out of 83 contractors, by the end of this year (at our location only). The bulk of this will happen in March 31st. Some of it is due to moving the positions into other countries (U.S., Argentina, maybe somewhere else), but I'm not sure how many positions will be closed down for good.

it's possible that they provide funding to other public infrastructure in an effort to help make them carbon neutral. i know that's what TD does in a number of cases where their own premises cannot be retrofitted, they'll end up providing funds to say a hospital to help them upgrade instead. I wish I had more info on it to share. When I heard it through work I thought it was a pretty interesting concept.

And that is exactly why we are experiencing the issue today
People were buying houses that they weren't able to afford in the first place and should have never been approved to buy.

The problem is though, they can't sell their house.
They owe more to the bank then they an in equity because of the decrease in the housing market...
They'll owe more money to the bank by selling their house so they can't even do that.

If had access to money I'd be buying up foreclosed real estate in the US. You can houses for nothing these days. I think that's what helped the increase in house sales in the US from Nov. to Dec.

Yeah, and that's just what has been announced in January I think. Doesn't include the financial industry carnage of 2008.

I feel very lucky in these times. I currently work for Citi. 300000+ employees worldwide. They announced last fall that 57000 employees would be let go. I have seen ppl from different departments already get their pink slips. There are rumours that at the end of feb once the tax season starts to wind down 25-45 percent of our department is going to be axed.

Now normally I would be VERY worried about this but as good luck would have it I have just been hired by the Mississauga Transit, so as an employee of not on the government but also the public transit system not only is my job secure but I just got one massive raise.

So as government spend $$$ on infrastructure NOW is the time to apply for a job with them. They want to try and deflate the unemployment rate during these times as much as they can.

With private companies such as Citi, seniority doesnt matter, it is literally survival of the fittest and survival of the ass kissers. Sad to say but the employees that fuck the boss and not the dog will likely keep their jobs.
