He was probably very emotionally involved in his character and by the sound of it this isn't the guys first fuckup. Christian was surely just having a bad day and this was the straw that broke the proverbial camels back i suppose.

I've worked as a DP's assistant before. Their work is high-pressure trying to work practically and keep the producers and execs happy. It's fucking hard, even on simple scenes! I can say I feel for this guy getting an ear bashing. Bale just lost my respect.

It probably was the last straw. Reading up on the report in imdb he was so focused on a really tense scene and was angry he got distracted. The irony is that he is going on and on about maintaining professionalism.
