My test: never went to driver's ed. Read handbook, took computer permit test ($15, I think). Needed 16/20 right answers to pass. Got asked the same question twice...

Road test - went in with an instructor. Only took one lesson with him (after driving with mom/dad for a while) and he said I could go for a test. Drove literally for about 3 minutes and cop said "you pass" - backing up, 3-point-turn, stop sign, and a tricky T-intersection with a ONE WAY sign - the cop doesn't tell you which way to go and if you do - FAIL.

Basically, it's so much easier with an instructor because the cop assumes a lot of things - didn't even ask about hand signals, and some people fail that. Parallel parking is also where many people fail. Driving test cost = $50.

Parallel parking I remember doing that my cunt of a teacher wanted to stay in this area (where we were practising) so he could go and talk to his architect so he said "ok you need to do this 10 times, if you get to even 9 and get one part wrong then it's another 10 " etc. so this is the first time I've done it so he's thinking he'll get a whole afternoon out of this one (of my fucking paid time.. say �200 worth)...

Well unlike most other things (I'd done fuck all training before a week long course him "what does this sign mean?" ... me "stop" him "does it say stop on it?"... "no" "what do you want from this course?") turns out I was a natural and did all 10 first go he was fucking pissed off hahahaha. Definition of satisfaction.

In most of California, they don't even test you on parallel parking.

In that you have a reasonably long test driving where missing one key mirror check is an instant fail. Touching a kerb on a manoeuvre is an instant fail etc.

After doing the British system (it took me from December until August to pass my test) I was stunned at how easy the US system was.

I had a theory equivalent that was fairly straightforward but the test was a JOKE. I basically drove around the block where the DMV was, I was done in less than 3 minutes. Explains why the standard of driving in the US is FUCKING ABYSMAL
