there IS no proper way. but your approach is one of the better ones, you should always be 100% happy with your mix. If you feel like you have to say "it's not mastered yet" when letting others having a listen, you mean to say the track is not finished mixing yet.

Mastering is no magic potion which puts a spell of succes around your track. It should be merely a compatibillity checklist.

parallel compression, high/low cuts, compressing and EQing subgroups is where you should gain.

Sometimes track don't always need mastering, but when then they do, I mix to just below 0dbfs, then master to just below 0dbfs (-2 at most). Why do you do it to -5dbfs - it's just giving yourself less dynamic range in your mix and more noise floor in your master when you increase back up to 0dbfs.
