He was a Bishop - and unmarried - he was not allowed to be having sex with women - let alone misstresses - he violated one of the Catholic Church's very important rules for high ranking clergy (obstaining from sex). Well, at least he wasnt raping children.

They've been "trying" to reform the Church, will very little success - because not everyone wants to change. Hardly anyone.

The reason they get so many converts and new members is because its more or less the same damn thing that it was 2000 years ago.

Try to see it from a believers standpoint, if you want to worship the triune God, as similarly as you can to how the disciples and apostles did, the best way is to join the Church that maintains those traditions to this day.

The Catholic Church wont change that much, ever, because it cant. The political reality is also something to note, for example in the USA the Catholic voters seem to be fairly progressive and lean heavily in favor of the democrats. So Im not sure im ready to admit that the Church needs to get with the times if the church goers themselves already seem to be moving in that direction all on their own.

Dude, excommunication means that a person cannot receive the sacraments, which includes reconciliation. If he is denied reconciliation then he cannot atone for and be forgiven his sins. This is a terrible punishment and is reserved for only the worst of the worst... sex outside of marriage is only a venial sin and breaking the whole clergy celibacy thing isn't a sin at all.... hell, it isn't even a hard and fast rule as there are married Roman Catholic priests.

Not to mention the Eastern Rite catholic priests who can of course marry a lot more easily.
