i'll be making my first trip this year. don't know if we're driving or megabus'ing it. staying at the Renaissance

Posted by beema on Apr-07-2009 22:31:

yeah the parties that get posted first generally have lineups that are mostly locals
the parties with bigger names tend to come out closer to DEMF.

talked to Matt Tolfrey the other day and he said they are doing a Leftroom party on Sunday night I believe

you can also pretty much guarantee (I hope) that there will be another party at The Old Miami on Monday morning

GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
5.23.2009 @ 9:00pm

GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY * MATHEW DEARS BIG HANDS * TELEFON TEL AVIV * MICHNA WITH RAW PAW * DEASTRO * 9PM * 18+ * $15/$20

You could throw around generous descriptors and any number of genre-locking terms; electronic pop, minimal house, acid techno. But you'd still fail to get to the center of Matthew Dear. With releases under no fewer than three aliases, including False (M_NUS), Jabberjaw (Perlon), and Audion (Spectral Sound), the Texas native has earned his international status over the course of a decade, getting his bearings on the DJ decks as a teenager to flooring sold-out crowds at venues like Fabric, and releasing universally praised original productions. After meeting Ghostly founder Sam Valenti IV at a house party in the late 90s, Dear eventually produced the A-Side for the labels first 12 release, Hands Up for Detroit. Since then, Dear issued his pop-infused debut album Leave Luck to Heaven and its counterpart Backstroke, which caught mainstream attention, as well as myriad releases under his club-oriented pseudonyms (including the omnipresent, chart-topping Mouth to Mouth as Audion). Further accomplishments include requests from the Postal Service and Hot Chip for his remix skills, and incessant touring with constantly evolving DJ sets and live performances. He'll still tell you that his greatest pleasure is a quiet day of fishing, but with the release of his sophomore full-length, Asa Breed, and his live band US/Euro tour as Matthew Dears Big Hands, its clear that Dear has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

Id wanted to goto the Ghostly party to hang with friends but compared to the WMC lineup they had, that kinda blows (in terms of what I'd be looking for anyways...)
what a gyp

wmc gets 3 hour audion set, demf gets Big Hands (which I have seen and was very lame).
oh well
I'm sure there will be other insane parties that night

FYI
ReSolute party is Sunday morning (afterhours)

or she
I mean, it's their job to promote these parties, but making such a useless post in a thread that already has the same exact info in the first post is asinine

That's my point. I'm all for people promoting their business, but not in a borderline SpamBot fashion. It's just irritating. I mean, how many posts of the exact same thing can people take?

I have seen the Dear as Audion countless times and he just murdered venues, but I have not seen him as Big Hands - is he really not good?

I'm curious because I have a lot of respect for Matthew Dear in general and I think he's outrageous on the decks.

Heh, my sentiments exactly. He fucked up royally on the main stage a few years back. First set I'd ever walked out of due to the quality of performance.

It was a terrible ending to a great weekend. Probably one of the worst disasters I have ever heard.

Big Hands is just the live band that performs stuff off Asa Breed. So it's completely different than say Audion or a Matthew Dear DJ set. I just don't really dig that kind of music.
I saw them at Avalon Hollywood last year and it was meh... Matt prancing around stage like a d-bag in front of some fancy blinking lights. It was the musical equivalent of an over-acted performance in a movie by someone who is not quite a respected actor so they are trying to overcompensate.
I'd much rather see him spin or do a live Audion set (which thankfully he will be doing at the festival itself).

The lineup for Ghostly Miami was all their DJ roster. The lineup for Ghostly DEMF appears to be all their oddball bands and live acts, which is just not my thing.

lol
so true
glad to see other people ripping into him and not just me. That performance was inexcusable.

I agree with that. Especially considering he played right after Richie Hawtin destroyed the Beatport tent. It was my first time seeing Mills too, so it was extremely disappointing.

However, I saw him in May of last year and I was absolutely floored. There were multiple times in the set that I was laughing in disbelief at how good it was.

After that experience, if that Jeff Mills after party actually happens, it's worth the risk going to for me.

Thanks for the info. I've heard about that collaboration and his other however many odd alias' but I never really researched into it. It doesn't really sound like anything I would be into..

Interesting.

I might want to check this out.

What is the capacity of Oslo? Do you really think it's going to be that packed?

Well, they are prob having more names on the lineup soon. Cassy is good enough for me and prob to a lot, so there will prob be lots of ppl. No idea on the capacity, their website doesn't mention anything.

If I had to wager a guess, capacity at Oslo is sardine-canned at around 175 people, maybe less.

I'd love to see Cassy and Eric but you can count me out of this one. The heat there is unbearable. It ruined my night last time.

It's in a basement, and the only ventilation (no hyperbole here) is two tiny vents, about a square foot in size each, over the bar area.
Mind you, the bar area is divided from the booth/dancefloor area by a big solid wall. When I was there last year, they also only had sound in the dancefloor area. So if you wanted to hear the music at all you had to brave the 110 degree heat.
I can't deal with that kind of BS. It really should be illegal to hold events in environments like that.

Ugh, doesn't sound quite so appealing anymore.
