Indeed. Didn't mean to come off saying the music was the problem, just that the overall scene was most likely one of the first reasons I floated over.

In Sam's defense, though, if you guys were to give some of these house DJ's a chance, you might find that you enjoy them more than you'd think. I love trance, even the cheesy stuff that gets you made fun of... but I tend to enjoy house more these days, and I think the crowd/vibe has just as much to do with it as enjoying the music.

That's why we always got VIP tables at Pacha in NYC for Armin and any other "big name" DJ who came to town. With 4 people it comes to about $80 a person but ur up in the VIP with ur own table and u get a bottle of grey goose. And since events cost $40 or more, u figure ur gunna spend the other $40 on alcohol anyway so u might as well get the added breathing room too. Plus you can go back and forth from the dance floor to the VIP so you can still be with the crowd and then go take a breather. That's why smaller clubs are great, because they can pull in good talent, but they aren't the trendy cool clubs to go to so you don't get that crowd there. Unfortunately, in the US the only cities in the US where those clubs can survive is NYC, Miami, and LA.

House music is for puffs.... i am more into speedcore and terror.

Friday April 24th - Evolve w/ Kaskade @ The Mark
Friday May 29th - Evolve w/ Nic Fanciulli @ The Mark
Friday June 12th - Evolve w/ Lee Burridge @ The Mark
Friday June 19th - Evolve w/ Kazell @ The Mark

I've actually seen all 4 of these guys...Kaskade and Kazell were fun. But I did not get into Nic's or Lee's set.

Seriously. It's completely different if you go to the right places! The music becomes an acquired taste. And though that may seem a little forceful, who cares when you're having fun in the end?

edit: Still have to be in a certain mood for Lee.

... and if I can start to really dig d&b cause I meet some awesome, laid back folks at those shows... easing into house from trance ought to be a breeze

D&B is fun as hell

I'd have to agree... but when my boyfriend drug me out to the first few shows, I was like "WTF is THIS shit?!" It took a few outings for me to get into it

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for listening to new music. I actually do like some of the other genres. I guess what I was saying is I don't want to give up trance altogether. I'll probably try to get out and check out a couple of the upcoming shows at the Mark.

And that is not even counting the people that purchase at the door. Also remember their "capacity" is including the halls, huge back 2 rooms and outdoor area. But who wants to be there when the djs are playing...So really the capacity for our general purposes is around 500 probably, maybe 700 if you count VIP...And that is that front room fully packed...So go figure....3000 hits on the page, maybe 1500 purchases, and only 700 can fit in the main room. Those are all estimates of course but you get the point.

RITM currenty has 673 and Markus has 347. I would say when around 1500 is when you start getting into the danger zone. I may start using this as a reference point. For example, if you look at Acosta tonight, it already has 720 hits when the capacity is 400. It will be a sardine can in there. Only about maybe 80 can comfortably fit on that dance floor...And at half of 720 making a purchase, you already have 360 tickets sold and I'm sure more will sell at the door.

I am really backed up today with a sick son and a show. Will reply to the rest later but your theory is WAY off on the wantickets clicks. The show was not oversold. We always leave a buffer to not oversell it. Fire Marshal was even there at the peak of the night and gave everything the green light. To much risk involved with getting shut down to oversell a show like this.

There are always gonna be problems like this at big shows, you can't satisfy everyone. Ye armin got paid $50g's, but thats probably a discount for him, where he gets paid over $100k a gig at these euro festivals & shows like armin only. Oh, and about ticket prices, Opera is like an auction, not everyone gets the same price. You know people, your good, you don't, well your gonna be stuck in the back room or outside. Best thing if you DON'T know people, buy your tickets either RIGHT when they get posted on wanttickets so they're cheap, get on guestlist and show up early for some of these less known dj's, or don't go ;0 That way, if you end up going, you know you got in cheap at least haha. I understand your point of view about armin though, even the people that had connects were tossed around with because it's armin, and I understand their point of view, if someone is willing to pay $100 to get in and your paying nothing, obviously their going to try to make as much money as possible, it's a capitalistic society we live in.

But what is not theory is that with a higher number of URL hits, there are a higher number of ticket sales and you can base your own estimations and choose what you want to do off of that.

my point is that your post was completely off base.

or see Devin's post

there was actually over 7000 url clicks so with his theory we would of sold 3500 tickets. http://www.wantickets.com/EventDetail.aspx?e_id=49514 those URL clicks are useless. The event tickets had been on sale for 3 months. Tons of people go on there when i send out mailers each week in my upcoming events. I could click there for an hour and make it 1000 even. lol

You know what, we have started a registration form for people who buy tickets. Its 5 easy questions to help us gauge the people buying tickets and 1 of the questions is what is your favorite venue. A HUGE margin of people buying tickets to these shows say Opera is their favorite venue in Atlanta. I would say close to 90%-93%.

Posted by Caution_BiPolar on Apr-03-2009 22:31:

I think despite the comparisons, arguments, debates, etc in this thread, the main point was that, as a whole, the EDM community utterly loathes Opera and would be much happier if these shows were put on somewhere else. I'm not going to begin to pretend that I know everything involved when it comes to putting on a show, but I'm pretty damn sure there are other options out there than Opera.

So whether or not you can justify the reason Opera sucks, you all still agree that Opera does, in fact, suck. Am I correct?

Welcome aboard indeed.

I'm really hoping Markus doesn't actually draw a crowd. I love him, I want him to know he's appreciated here, but I do not want to have to spend my night outside (just like you!) just to be able to breathe while listening to the music which is the sole reason I go to these events.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have a man crush on Markus Schulz, Armin would've been my last event.

Rank 1 and ATB are in the danger zone of getting dropped just because I do not think I ever want to step in Opera again after Markus. How my night goes in 3 weeks will greatly affect if I ever go to Opera again or any event for that matter.

I'm only 23, and as cliche as it is, I really am getting too old for this shit.

You really shouldn't blame Armin or Liquified by the way. Does Armin get paid a lot more than he should? Ya. But that's supply and demand my friend. Opera is the problem though. They oversell capacity for these, they raise the price from $50 to $60 randomly, they overcharge for drinks, their staff are the assholes.

DJs to stay away from:

Armin van Buuren
Tiesto
Paul van Dyk

Just a head's up. Do not ever see these DJs if you want to be able to actually move around and dance to the music...let alone breathe. They get so many fake fans. I really wish they would make it a requirement to actually name a song these guys have produced to get entrance.
No offense dude but claiming your 23 and getting too old for this shit is the stupidest thing i think ive ever heard. You make it sound as if its some fatal trend you have to abandon. Claiming mellow dramatically its your "last show ever" hahaha. No offense man at all...im 28 and have been clubbing since i was 16. Probably way before you ever considered listening to edm. If you truly love going out to listen and support your favorite artist, then the thought of getting to old for seeing them is the worst thought logic ive ever heard for a plethora of reasons i dont even feel like listing. Maybe watching your favorite dj's whom you love so much is not of your standards and you would rather frequent the pizza sports bar down the street. Every person whom i have heard say a statement like you have is now a non edm fan and is enjoying nickelback and soulja boy more now...back to their roots i would assume. Hopefully thats not you...

... but could that possibly have to do with the concept that if Armin asked these people who their favorite DJ was, they'd likely say Armin just because it is him asking... whether they agree or not?

no because I am getting the same results from the shows I am selling tickets for at the Mark & The Tabernacle.

Posted by Caution_BiPolar on Apr-03-2009 22:36:

And one more thing... considering that a lot of us have expressed our distaste, it could be because the people who don't care for the club just stopped going.

Hope you don't think I'm flat out attacking Liquified by the way, just expressing my POV.

Posted by Caution_BiPolar on Apr-03-2009 22:39:

Well, I guess there's about an even base on the issue then. If that many people really do enjoy Opera, I guess it makes sense to do shows there. But... I can also completely relate to the issues stated here in this thread against the venue.

We are putting a lot more options out there for people right now. The Mark, Halo, Bazzaar, The Tabernacle, Dreams and 2 new places getting ready to open.

One other thing for everyone to consider, a lot of these djs LOVE playing at Opera and are requesting it.

Posted by Caution_BiPolar on Apr-03-2009 22:45:

And while we're at it, Bong is forcing me to voice his $0.02 =P

"People vote Opera because they know Liquified promotes there. If Liquified wasn't there, the people taking the poll might never even consider Opera. If Liquified did shows at Velvet Room most often, people would choose Velvet Room. They're more loyal to Liquified than Opera, trust me. You couldn't pay me to go to Opera on a night there wasn't a DJ. And I'd still never go to Primal (WetBar) if Liquified did shows there every weekend!"

-Bong, my lovely boyfriend, lol

Posted by Caution_BiPolar on Apr-03-2009 22:47:

Count my vote for Dreams, it's close and the parking is free!
