5. there's a difference between being a guy who just goes with what seems to be popular and on the racks at the dept. stores when he shops in need of new gear, and someone who goes out of their way to wear hawaiian shirts with painter hats trying to give a statement like, "fuck fashion, i'm cooler than you". it's so ignorantly cute to me if a guy just doesn't know or care that much about what's in his closet as long as he looks presntable and somewhat up to date with style. guys who can hang in a conversation about fashion and the latest trends turn me off...what can i say?

Jamie speaks the truth. I generally put in between 10-12 hours at the office and working from home per day, help Mrs. Hazard with anything she's doing while I'm home, play with my daughter, and still manage to not just take care of shit that needs fixing in the house but building decks, finishing basements, renovating, all my own plumbing, etc. I've remodeled about 70% of my home in 3 years and the only things I've had to pay someone else to do are the windows and furnace. Why do I do this... certainly not due to money... no, I do these things myself because that's what a fuckin' man does! Men are self-sufficient and no, being able to afford a plumber doesn't make you self sufficient, being able to do the fuckin' plumbing does. What kind of man puts himself in the position that he has to rely on others to do the things he wants/needs done? A weak, pathetic shell of a man, that's what kind; because, being a man means being able to take care of yourself and your family and if you can only do that by paying people to do it for you then you're pretty fuckin' useless when the money runs out or no one is available (or willing) to relieve you of your duties.

It's pretty damned unfortunate that popular culture, pop psychology, and a generation of parents teaching their young men to be kinder and gentler has lead to such a sissification of western men... what's even more unfortunate is that there are people who don't realize how little they resemble a man or believe that the ability to pay someone else to do what is really your responsibility somehow makes you a man... worse yet... most of these men feel smugly superior to those real men they pay to do what they can/will not do themselves.

hear hear, though not everyone knows the ins and outs of copper-piping, or whatever. for example if i had a home i wouldn't be building decks in my backyard without assistance, or a print- never worked construction. ask me to fabricate an enclosure for a central-air unit or something and it's no problem. can't expect us to know everything

i think every male (edit: everyone) should at least know how to read a blueprint so they can figure the shit out if they don't have the experience. your story reminds me of a spoiled friend of mine who just bought a house- he's doing all this piddily-stupid shit that he'll never use, like putting a crappy bar in his house, knocking out walls, replacing the siding- but he's paying someone else to do it. kid's never worked a physically laborious job in his life and now he needs someone to lead him around fixing his house for him.
