There is a software/hardware reseller in Liberty Village that promotes when the hire that it is a dog friendly work place. Dogs have to go for an interview before they are allowed to be brought into to workplace. The company is Softchoice and while I could care less and would probably not want to work in that environment I know many people who love it.

This company also has something called beercart Friday...they bring beer around on Friday afternoons for their employees.

I had a coworker who brought in her dog everyday..it was small and cute so i didn't mind..

For productivity purposes for me it would not work. However, it would be awesome as hell b/c I love dogs!

I want to bring my dog to work so badly ! I should run it by my boss, see what he thinks. In a high stress work environment dogs would be perfect - at least you have something to relieve stress. My dog Mika is hypallergenic too so allergies would not be an issue, and she is tiny.

There are plenty of reasons that it increases productivity:

For example:
- less missed days
- working longer hours
- fix relationships in the office
- increase in creativity

Here is one recent article on it:

Dogs are great and they just make things better in general. You have to remember that most of the time the dog is sleeping under your desk anyways. You take them out at lunch for a tiring run. Play with them on breaks but in general they are sleeping or lying down.

What I am saying is that animals at work = unprofessional in my opinion. I guess it depends on the job, but in 99% of cases it is unprofessional

i think you have that in reverse. probably only 1% would be unprofessional. basically the only people that shouldn't bring dogs are surgeons.

Thanks for the article Marg!! Im pretty sure Im going to include this in one of my projects this year (how attitudes and behaviours effect productivity)

I really don't mind as long as they keep their dog in their own office. I know of one woman who got a new dog and there is no one home on Thursdays to look after it so she brings it in. The dog stays quiet and is in no ones way. If you had a cubicle and there was a potential for the dog being in the way or bothering co workers...that may be an issue.

No dogs allowed.

It's annoying enough when people bring their kids in.

That's if you don't get distracted easily. I do...especially when it comes to dogs.

people working with food, drinks, heavy machinery (for the dogs sake) etc

but fully agree on the previous points, some dogs are well behaved, have no dander so not a problem for allergies so very few concerns, but as a person who cannot bring their dog to work i am often unable to stay late as i would have done to get more work done because i have to get home so the dog isn't alone for an unfair amount of time. i would potentially do up to 10 hours more a week in busy periods (on salary, so free for them) and even though he'd sleep by my feet and there are other dogs in the office building with other companies i got nixed. therefore i'll leave when i need to regardless of how busy it is - since they cannot incorporate my dog as part of my work life they have to accept my responsibilities to him as part of my personal life, their loss imo.

i'm not a kids person anyway but disagree with them being present as they are far more demanding than a dog.

Yeah I was thinking about bringing my tortoise. He could crawl around my desk all day

Do you really have a parrot? (I love birds)

I think the big thing to understand here is that it obviously does not work in every workplace and every industry. If it doesn't work in your workplace then it doesn't, no ones saying that it will, there are so many factors to take into account which are specific to each workplace.

The bottom line though, people get pets because it makes them happy, if it works out that it wouldn't be a problem to bring a pet into YOUR workplace, I'm all for it. Happiness is good at every workplace, even if it's just a little extra boost

Exactly!!!

Add a dog to any situation and it improves.

I like dogs.

Posted by Spam on Apr-10-2009 15:25:

If the dog is well-behaved and quiet, and depending on the work environment, I see no reason not to allow the dog in the workplace.

Allergies can be a problem, although certainly not deadly (in the case of dogs) and are generally temporary. From my experience and discussion with others who have had pet allergies, usually daily exposure is enough to weaken the allergic reactions, and/or eventually nullify them entirely. Personally, I used to not be able to sit in the same HOUSE as a cat for more than 10-15 minutes before a constant runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes would ruin my day. But through constant exposure, I no longer have those allergic reactions to cats, and OWN 2 of them now.

Again though, if that's not how it works for everyone, a workplace with such an employee working should probably have a no-dogs rule.

Long story short, dogs are fantastic, provided that the conditions of the workplace favour their presence.

my roommate owns a cat and she's pretty allergic to cats in general
her allergy did not get any better, sometimes it feels that it got worse

but she loves him to bits and would rather suffer then give him up

It wouldn't really, but it helps employee engagement which helps productivity.

However if you're not one of the people with a dog then I can see other people's dogs being realllly annoying.

dogs in a workplace environment = probably one of the dumbest ideas ive ever heard of

with the exception of the workplace.

I think it is a great idea in the right place and with the right policy around it. The dog should be screened and well behaved.. if they are then all they do is lay around and provide a smile when you need one.

Employee engagement is #1 in producing great results in all areas.. service, sales, etc. People who believe in the values of a company act in that way naturally, not just because they are the rules. Doing something like allowing dogs at work can help create a sense of shared values among employees and the employer, and that can go a long way.

It definitely doesn't fit everywhere, and probably easier to make part of the culture in a new upstart office or company.

My dog would love to come to work with me! Free food everywhere! (Dogs in restaurants = bad idea for everyone LOL)

Let me relax and have a glass of whiskey to feel comfortable at the office (like how it used to be allowed) and i will have no problem tolerating a dog in order to make someone else feel comfortable.

Tolerance is a 2 way street.
