I think it's overly cynical to dismiss these antics as mere "marketing strategies", to be honest. Sven has been pulling off stunts like these from day one of his DJing career, long before the face paint and long before Cocoon became a successful brand name.

And long before he was a DJ he was a somewhat clean cut pop star that had a great marketing team behind him. How else could a guy with little to no singing ability get popularity? I am not saying I hate Sven at all, one of my favourite outings of all time was a 8 hour marathon set from the man.

When people tend to talk about Sven, do they tend to talk more about the music or the antics? Cheesco once said something about the man that rang pretty true. Something along the lines that Sven picks a bunch of tracks at the beginning of the year, and basically plays those until the next year when the process has to repeat itself. We would all laugh at trance jocks and their jesus posing, but are Sven's antics really that different? The same people that say Tiesto is a moron for all the posing, seem to think it is ok when Sven does it. He is not a shit dj, but is far from being one of the best in terms of technicality.

Actually, Sven was DJing years before he became a member of Off (he became resident at Dorian Gray in 1982). Even his time in Off can be debated as to how much it made him a pop star in the regular sense (he pales in comparison to proper german pop stars of that era such as Dieter Bohlen).

Noone has ever claimed that Sven is a technically skilled DJ, so I dunno why you're bringing that up...

You could perhaps argue that he has been pulling off these antics from day one in order to cash in on the resulting cult following, but are you really going to cut him that little slack? We're talking about the guy who insisted on completing his double-digit hour bookings, even if it involved wearing an oxygen mask or mixing with just one arm.

I certainly agree with you that his antics are nothing short of ridiculous, and that trance DJs should not cop all the flak they do for hyping to the crowd when Sven can do it without anyone batting an eyelid. I also agree that he after establishing Cocoon has made obvious creative choices towards marketing it as a brand. However, despite all this, it is still extremely cynical and speculative to dismiss the antics of someone with the track record Sven has on passion for dance music as mere pandering in order to sell more t-shirts. If anything, these antics are all just another trait of the rather eccentric personality that Sven has always been (just look at the covers for his old Eye-Q albums, for instance).

Yes, I'm just not a presumptuous "cynic" who thinks he has the Cocoon-conspiracy all figured out.

I think there is a huge difference between Sven's spontaneous behaviour when under the influence, and the sometimes clinical approach to "crowd pleasing" from the top trance DJs. These are not intentional jesus poses he is waving, rather his own interpretation of how to get involved with his set.

I am not the biggest cocoon fan to be honest, but if sven gets booked i will still go.

i need to find the interview where lee burridge talks about sven taking a shit in the club and throws it at the bouncers.

That is definitely Len Faki - Death By House.

Does anyone know if Sven is always around Cocoon on a Friday night, or just the odd weekend here and there?
Going to the Minus night on May 1st, just wondering if he would be there to do his "Yeeaaauughhhh"
