The problem here is not them. It is the antiquated stupid media companies. Instead of changing with the times, when people want them to, and would support them if they did, they just keep on their same stupid tactics and fuck us all in the ass. Yet we have no choice legally, and therefore, are in a catch 22.

I'll admit that downloading is 'stealing' when politicians admit that what they do is 'murder'.

Originally posted by Domesticated but because I support artists and want to keep them in business, I buy.
quote:
Originally posted by gehzumteufel Except for the fact that the money you put towards their music never gets to them. If you want to support an artist, go see them. Buying their music from a retailer makes them pretty much nothing.
quote:
Originally posted by Domesticated I do that too. Buying music is more of a principle than a practical exercise, however you're also supporting the record labels, who in turn employ producers and DJs for A&R, marketing, throw parties for their artists and DJs to play at, and generally uphold the industry.
quote:
Not only that, but if the good record labels go out of business, then a majority of artists would be forced to release their music themselves, either through a self-managed label (yay, more shitty netlabels!) or through their own website, both of which seem stupid to me. I'd prefer to keep paying, keep getting that warm, self-righteous glow, and keep seeing excellent labels promoting new talent rather than me having to spend eight hours a day on the net to find them.
quote:
Also, I'm increasingly opposed to digital format. I buy as much music as I can on CD, which is a label-based enterprise. If labels were to fall by the wayside, I'd be forced to buy shitty low-fidelity music all day with no sexy covers to go with it.

Originally posted by gehzumteufel I flat out disagree with this. I understand your reasoning behind it, but there are alternatives to the total shit stuff that is distributed. Uncompressed PCM wav is too large, but FLAC, or ALAC even, are VERY good alternatives. Especially FLAC since it supports 24bit 96Khz audio for the HD audio and is royalty free since it is open source and licensed under the GPL. Nine Inch Nails does this. Their "The Slip" album I downloaded direct from their website in 96Khz/24bit FLAC. It is beautiful. So clear, clean, and bit perfect to what you would buy on cd. In fact, it is HIGHER quality than what you would buy on cd.

Originally posted by gehzumteufel I fail to see how this can't be done on a smaller, no bullshit label. The EDM industry has done an awesome job at this, as compared to the mainstream labels for Rock, R&B and Hip-Hop, Pop, etc. They actually make money and aren't getting raw deals (this is relative. I refuse to say they don't get them at all, as I know a few artist friends that have gotten fucked over) in general for the most part.

Originally posted by gehzumteufel While I don't disagree that without the labels, they wouldn't have some of the management, but without the massive labels like BMG, WMG, UMG, Sony, etc we wouldn't have some of these massively popular shit artists and creative control would be more in the hands of the artist.

Originally posted by Domesticated The labels I had in mind were people like Kompakt, Ostgut Tontranger and Cocoon, or Blue Tunes, Iboga, HOM-Mega, Doof, Twisted etc. Mainstream labels didn't even enter my mind in regards to this conversation, simply because I have no interest in supporting them and because I don't like any of the material on their labels anyway.

I agree, but again I didn't even think of those labels.

As for FLAC, agree 100% I love the format and ease of converting, and best of all it's open source!
