How did they break the law exactly?

They assisted in making copyright content available to be pirated which is illegal.

So why don't they also sue the ISPs who provided them with the server?
Ultimately they are responsible for whatever they host, no?

Posted by gehzumteufel on Apr-17-2009 23:33:

The problem here is not them. It is the antiquated stupid media companies. Instead of changing with the times, when people want them to, and would support them if they did, they just keep on their same stupid tactics and fuck us all in the ass. Yet we have no choice legally, and therefore, are in a catch 22.

I don't want to make you think too hard but it always makes me laugh when ppl choose to selectively get on their high horse. For example, the animation in your avatar. What gives you the right to take someone's else artwork and use it without their expressed written permission? Or is it ok because you deem it to be ok? Those without sin cast the first stone...

Keep in mind you're talking to a person who's quoting him/herself in his/her signature.

I concur,if they were growing weed on someone else s land they'd be legally accountable for their tenants actions.Makes no since, pick one way to try someone or another.Yet if we look at the world in 2d with only get two outlooks....whatever I'm high

Used Google lately, or what about rapidfire, blogsearch, megaupload?

I'll admit that downloading is 'stealing' when politicians admit that what they do is 'murder'.

He never said that he doesn't do illegal things, only that if you do you should be prepared to take the consequences. Learn to read.

I'm pretty happy about this. I hate all you cunts who sit at home stealing shit that people have worked really hard on. Not that I don't do it myself every once in a while (in fact, I stole some Marc Romboy tracks last week, but that was just to pay him back for not buying me a beer when I'd already bought him one), but I'm sick of people who steal everything and give nothing. I spend about $100 a week on music and it hurts; I could be putting that money towards something far more constructive, but because I support artists and want to keep them in business, I buy.

I'll admit it: Rainbows aren't gay.

But now that you admit they are cool, you are gay.

Except for the fact that the money you put towards their music never gets to them. If you want to support an artist, go see them. Buying their music from a retailer makes them pretty much nothing.

I do that too. Buying music is more of a principle than a practical exercise, however you're also supporting the record labels, who in turn employ producers and DJs for A&R, marketing, throw parties for their artists and DJs to play at, and generally uphold the industry.

Not only that, but if the good record labels go out of business, then a majority of artists would be forced to release their music themselves, either through a self-managed label (yay, more shitty netlabels!) or through their own website, both of which seem stupid to me. I'd prefer to keep paying, keep getting that warm, self-righteous glow, and keep seeing excellent labels promoting new talent rather than me having to spend eight hours a day on the net to find them.

Also, I'm increasingly opposed to digital format. I buy as much music as I can on CD, which is a label-based enterprise. If labels were to fall by the wayside, I'd be forced to buy shitty low-fidelity music all day with no sexy covers to go with it.

I fail to see how this can't be done on a smaller, no bullshit label. The EDM industry has done an awesome job at this, as compared to the mainstream labels for Rock, R&B and Hip-Hop, Pop, etc. They actually make money and aren't getting raw deals (this is relative. I refuse to say they don't get them at all, as I know a few artist friends that have gotten fucked over) in general for the most part.

While I don't disagree that without the labels, they wouldn't have some of the management, but without the massive labels like BMG, WMG, UMG, Sony, etc we wouldn't have some of these massively popular shit artists and creative control would be more in the hands of the artist.

I flat out disagree with this. I understand your reasoning behind it, but there are alternatives to the total shit stuff that is distributed. Uncompressed PCM wav is too large, but FLAC, or ALAC even, are VERY good alternatives. Especially FLAC since it supports 24bit 96Khz audio for the HD audio and is royalty free since it is open source and licensed under the GPL. Nine Inch Nails does this. Their "The Slip" album I downloaded direct from their website in 96Khz/24bit FLAC. It is beautiful. So clear, clean, and bit perfect to what you would buy on cd. In fact, it is HIGHER quality than what you would buy on cd.

I concur,I wouldn't trade my FLAC to save my life.

The labels I had in mind were people like Kompakt, Ostgut Tontranger and Cocoon, or Blue Tunes, Iboga, HOM-Mega, Doof, Twisted etc. Mainstream labels didn't even enter my mind in regards to this conversation, simply because I have no interest in supporting them and because I don't like any of the material on their labels anyway.

I agree, but again I didn't even think of those labels.

The joy of owning a physical release still applies here.

Seriously. I love FLAC so much. My buddy gave me his iPod mini he didn't want. I loaded rockbox on it today and boy am I glad. Now I just need a 32gb CF card. Flash based mp3 player for $80 and it plays all the formats you can throw at it!

No doubt those are good labels. And I commend them for their quality, but that doesn't detract from the other labels that we have to put up with for other genres. So much shit is released, so much oversight over artists being *GHASP* artists. Bullshit obviously, but how else do we not support this shitty business relationship without stealing the music?

It doesn't for me, but I can respect it does for others. To each their own.

dude that was a few months ago. Quit being a slacker and get the card As for FLAC, agree 100% I love the format and ease of converting, and best of all it's open source!
