lol so bad but so true

How they could factor in crime and place Kingston on the top 10 is absolutely beyond me

I went to Nelson HS for my senior year. As far as I remember, out of 1300 students that year, there were 17 visible minority kids. But Nelson was the worst. very money, very waspy neighbourhood

Def told wrong. Prices are through the roof in Vancouver (no pun intended)

it might be the area, but a friend of mine lives + works there, when she told me how much they are paying for a 2-bedroom I couldn't believe my ears

Posted by Frenchie on Apr-27-2009 20:50:

Yeah Vancity is disgustingly pricey.

Really not surprised that Toronto didn't make top 10.

I went to Central High downtown, from grades 7 - 12. Same issue. Bairly any minorities, not as 'money' oriented of a school though.

actually Toronto had highest AVERAGE rental rates for 1 bedroom, you will pay about $100 more in TO than in Vancouver, and Toronto was about $300 more than Montreal. Ouch. Now if we are talking about buying, Vancouver is in an astronomical class of its own

http://www.livingin-canada.com/house-prices-canada.html

Vancouver's gang-related murders have spiked but the city usually has a lower crime rate than say Winnipeg or Regina. I think it's finally cooling off now.

Toronto is typically the best for work, Vancouver the best for outdoor leisure and sightseeing (by far) and Montreal the best for nightlife, imo. I wish I could live in all three simultaneously for those reasons, not Ottawa/Kabul

The rest of Canada is one big giant meh if you're currently not busy with pressing domestic committments like family/kids...

...or internet/tv

You forgot the most important thing, Vancouver has by far the best Sushi.

I was gonna say... I don't necessarily think that Toronto should be in the top 10, but the fact that Kingston and Peterborough are in there make me wonder what those reviewers were smoking (probably some nice BC bud, seeing as how they put Victoria at the top of the list).

Posted by slingshot on Apr-27-2009 21:49:

Doesn't Toronto consistently make the top 10 places in the world to live list? How can it make that list (Forbes does it I think?) and not this one..lol. I'd like to see the weighting of each category in how they compiled the scores. Something tells me it may be tailored to the....I dunno.....65+ crowd.

Who bases anything on the price of rent :P lol

Price of owning a home is the most important thing to look at.

And like i was saying before, Vancouver is a beautiful city. Probably one of the nicest cities i've been too. But based on the criteria that it didn't calculate, ie. scenery, the mountains, there isn't much left in Vancouver.

Gang-wise, Vancouver is one of the highest in the Canada. Regina and Winnipeg only have high crime rates, but that's because of the Natives.

Based on the critieria of this article...Vancouver should not be in the top 10.

PS. Funky..here you go :P

For January 2009
CREA (Canadian Real Estate Association)

City /Average House Price/12 Month Change
Vancouver, BC / $536,000 / - 8.8 %
Calgary, Alb / $362,000 / - 11.4 %
Toronto, Ont / $344,000 / - 8.2 %
Ottawa, Ont / $291,000 / + 1.8 %
Montreal, Que / $252,000 / + 2.3 %
Halifax, NS / $243,000 / + 11.1 %
Regina, Sask / $214,000 / + 7.6 %
Fredericton, NB / $156,000 / + 7.3 %

you have to look at ALL the variables besides owning a home. Quebec for example takes the cake for affordable real estate, so too does New Brunswick. I'll pass on NB

But indeed it is a significant variable and the article suggests that too. Really, I should be thankful for living here in Ottawa when it comes down to it: low crime rates, relatively good employment rates, low housing costs and best of all, close proximity to Montreal

Toronto would be better if all your sports teams didn't blow. The early success of the FC and Jays is just a facade

Born on the east coast, lived a decade in T.O., and now a resident of Ottawa. It has a "boring" wrap in terms of nightlife (which is justified, but with Montreal and T.O. so close you can go there for the weekend if you need a jolt), but the OVERALL quality of life in Ottawa is incredible.

Posted by kotsy on Apr-27-2009 23:39:

well this list is clearly bullshit
