He's a fucking great DJ but his recent productions are just like, token epic house tracks.

I'm so over big swooshy big room proggy stuff.

I like it when he keeps things deep and chunky.

Have you heard Everything's Here? It's nice and dark and groovy.

What on Dig Deeper resembles a big room swooshy prog track? Please give me an example I feel you have no idea what you're talking about.

Danny isnt 2003 w/ Sex on Wax anymore

Being an amazing DJ is so hard now, everyone has access to the latest tracks and can stitch them together in software. No one (except the old school) know what a REAL DJ is anymore.

If you want to become a big dj hang around for awhile until being a DJ isnt the cool thing to do anymore. There will be less competition.

The other problem is, at least in B-list cities like Philly, the economy is so fucked that noone can keep a medium sized or large venue open. 10 years ago we had 5 or 6 of these clubs to choose from, there's now maybe 1 or 0 so everyones' throwing one off's in lounges, rented spaces, and restaurants. If the economy improves I think things will turn around, at least in my city.

Danny is probably the DJ I admire the most as I honestly dont think there is any other DJ on the planet who can weave through so many forms of music and still keep their own unique sound throughout. He is head and shoulders above 99.9% of DJs and I think most importantly, is the fact that he earned his fame and reputation through DJing alone. But now times have changed and practically no-one gets recognised as a DJ without having their own productions out first. It is a sales driven market now with little or no room for "traditional DJs" to break in. So I think Danny has found that in order to stay within the top tier of DJs, he needs to get his own stuff out on a consistent basis. I am not saying that he is only producing out of sheer pressure to do so or that he doesnt enjoy/have a talent for it, I just think that most promoters around the world nowadays are booking DJs purely based on their productions & Danny needs releases to stay in the mindframe of the edm community.

I havent been that into his new stuff so far. They are far from bad and I did think "The Shining" was a great track but the rest I have found to be just decent. I suppose given that he has been a hero of mine for so many years, I expect his releases to be 10/10 material every time! Again, I do like his newer stuff but just cant hold in the same regard as his DJing.....yet! But let's hope he gets better and better with each release.

This was an awesome post. Danny is to DJ'ing as Mickey Mantle was to baseball.

danny's productions are garnering some extreme reactions. personally I can't see how anyone would be less than amazed with any of them, but I guess 'September' and 'The Shining' are really just a little above average prog house. I think in 6 months dig deeper will be sounding way better than it is right now though.

no one listens to prognooooooooooooo!

-eminem.

this sounds the same as everything else out right now in this style of music imo.

well he's always had a timeless sound and that type of music doesnt always blow up in popularity. Sometimes their relevance only appears as time passes. Danny doesnt bandwagon jump so I feel his productions will always be "growers". Music that you have to listen to several times before fully appreciating them.

Maybe we should take this discussion over to RA where, apparently, there are less critical users?

Wait, what was the name of the song in the first youtube vid? What is the release schedule on that?

His productions might not be in the same class as his DJ sets, but I still think they're good tracks. The people criticising them in this thread are mainly the people who don't like much progressive, and as such like Howells for different reasons. That's all well and good, but you've got to accept that he has his roots in progressive house. It's always going to be an influence to him, and I fully respect the fact he's still producing tracks recognisably similar to the ones he was putting out twelve years ago, rather than selling out to a more trendy sound.

BLEEP BLEEP BOOP BEEP BEEP HICLOVIS!

Seriously though, most of his greatest sets have been purely progressive house sets I.E. from 1998-2004, I love the direction he's taking with his tracks.
