i have no problem with an event like this. the only thing i see wrong is labelling it as a fundraiser. it is not a fundraiser. from what i understand, you want to raise money to continue hosting more events in the future. that means you want to make a profit and use those funds to continue doing what you're doing. that does not make this a fundraiser. it makes it a business.

if this is considered a fundraiser then every club out there should label their events as a fundraiser.

Well, as long as you have no problem with it, I can sleep soundly at night.

O.k., just so I can appease the TOTA semantics police, what would you call a free event with a suggestion of donation to help further what we're doing? "businessmoneyraiser" just sounds awkward.

Posted by b4k-oz on May-08-2009 13:50:

Probably the best thing is to just call it a Free Deck Party and that all you are asking for is a donation for your cause.

Now, ahem...Pay no attention to the people in here who are quick to put you down.

Some of them have forgotten what being a TOTA dj is...or what it was like for them before they got their foot through the door. How sad

Cheers

agreed. that way a donation is not mandatory.
fundraiser events is when everyone must pay and the money goes to another cause.

Update...

We're still going ahead with this weekend's shenanigans, but have decided to scale back the party and shift the focus to just having a fun day out in the sun on our newly renovated deck. I realized I've been feeling pretty overloaded as of recent, and after talking with the wife and Andreas we've decided to temporarily put the larger Pivot events on the backburner while I focus on finishing up the spring term for shiatsu school. So the semantics police can put away their batons - we'll still be passing the hat, but now we'll be doing so to help cover the costs of the gear, gas for the out of town talent (Curtis is coming in from Guelph), drinks for the DJs and a case of almond milk for smoothies. Anything that's leftover will go toward purchasing discard wood so we can make planters and green our deck out for future enjoyment for everyone!

I won't be putting this up in the events forum, as we're keeping this invite-only. Our deck can comfortably fit about 40 people and TOTAs who've expressed interest in attending can PM me or send an email to [email protected] with your name and the number of guests you're planning on bringing.

We're going with Saturday the 16th - forecast so far is sunny and 17C with the chance of showers. We'll only cancel if it looks like there will be more rain than sun - so far, we're sitting pretty. Start time is 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. - perfect warmup for the rest of the weekend! And we've decided to keep the 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. slot available for one or two DJs/PAs who'd like the opportunity to strut their stuff, with the possibility of being booked for future Pivot events. TOTA DJs/PAs who'd like to throw down should PM me with a link to a recorded set - we'll pick and announce the opener in a couple of days. Please keep in mind that we're a turntable-only setup - if you use Serato, you'll have to bring your own interface.

Will be a day of stellar tunes, with everything from classic Chicago House to banging Techno and all shades between. Especially excited for Curtis Maranda, who's now incorporating live elements into his DJ sets. Check these out - some seriously high energy mixes!

Decknanigans!

dude im too lazy to PM but im interested in comin by...info?

Posted by PivotTechno on May-12-2009 01:02:

lol @ too lazy to PM - aren't you on the mail list already?

Here's what imma gonna do- everyone in this thread who's already expressed interest will get a PM from me with deets and directions - easy peasy.

Ryan and Mark are using the Dynacord for their own thang this weekend, but we're getting a nice pair of powered tops to go with my sub. Loud enough to rump shake, but won't disturb the neighbours in the houses across from the back lot.

PM me for sure, I wouldn't mind stopping by for a beer. As long as I've gotten my rest and everything else is done, I'll come by...

deckponement!

Hey everyone!

I'm sorry to say that we're going to have to postpone this weekend's festivities until a later date. The forecast is now calling for light rain all day Saturday, and a rather brisk 10C on Sunday, neither of which are conducive to decent Decknanigans. We'll save it for sunnier climes and announce the makeup date a couple of weeks in advance.

Soon baby, soon...

Have a great long weekend!

...aaaand, we're ON!

Up to my armpits with shiatsu midterms and anatomy assignments, but just wanted to let everyone know that we're a go-go for the makeup date for Decknanigans - mark June 20 on your calendars! The DJ lineup is going to keek arse and I'll be putting up full deets once all the school stuff is out of the way!

Back to meridians, tsubos and cun measurements - ciao for now!

Posted by PivotTechno on Jun-11-2009 17:26:

I really gotta get burning on this anatomy assignment, but I couldn't hold off on revealing the full lineup for Decknanigans - it's a corker!

Eric Lork - http://thefamilyumbrella.gaia.com/b...mix_-_eric_lork
- the understated veteran brings his smooth mix of classics and newfound sounds to open up the afternoon and set the mood proper!

Curtis Maranda - http://www.curtismaranda.com/
- Guelph has has been home to more quality DJs than you can shake a tonearm at, and Curtis is no exception - expect some breezy afternoon beats accented with sparkling live instrumentation!

Trevor "Isoprax" Wilkes - http://www.fun-in-the-murky.com/
- new daddy Trevor is the original vinyl fanatic, with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things dance - tuneage without pretense, crossing genres and decades of fun!

WestsideWax - http://pivot.fun-in-the-murky.com/W...%20Lum%20Er.mp3
- one of your hosts for the day and a 25 year veteran on the wheels of steel - rolling, dirty, inner-city funk, delivering the three-deck remedy for the dancefloor!

DJ Flim - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHgRjkJgvGQ
- say goodbye to the beach party veteran as he serenades the setting sun with a plethora of insanely otherworldly sounds before booking off on summer tour!

Andreas Marouchos - http://www.subcoderecords.com/mixes...lMix_August.mp3
- crossbreeding the tastiest of Detroit and European flavours, another three turntable technician closes off the evening with a guaranteed discofried stormer!

I'll be PMing the TOTAs who've expressed interest in attending with the deets!

Posted by Skipper on Jun-11-2009 17:59:

Eric Lork, now there's a name and a face I haven't seen in awhile. Nice guy, good DJ!

Posted by PivotTechno on Jun-11-2009 20:19:

Eric's top notch - brings such a good vibe to the decks!

Posted by PivotTechno on Jun-15-2009 15:18:

PMs have been sent out, and the Dynacord is reserved and ready to shake up the 'hood...now, if someone could switch the dial so the weather forecast goes back to the 28C and sunny they were calling for Saturday as of yesterday, I'll be a happy camper!

Posted by PivotTechno on Jun-18-2009 21:53:

Decknanigans is now Indoornanigans!

For those TOTAs who were planning on stopping by for ze deck party, there's been a slight change of plans, due to the 20-30mm of rain they're calling for this Saturday. We're now moving things indoors, and will be starting at 8 p.m., going until whenver. Flim and Isoprax are still on board to play, and I'm just waiting to hear back from the other DJs. Same location, but front door this time 'round - knock loudly!

Don't I wish...Enviro Canada and the Weather Network are both calling for the same thing, and of course starting Sunday, it's going to be 30C and sunny for a week straight - sometimes the universe has a strange sense of humour...

We'll get around to holding the outdoor version sometime after the Beat Root Fest, but I'm still hyped for tomorrow night - really need to blow off some steam after handing in that 30+ page assignment. Disco ball is going up in the front room today and all of the DJs on board (Flim, Isoprax, Rouchos and yours truly) are hyped to throw down!
