so the only proof the world has is nefardec's word? i find it hard to believe he hit play and didn't do anything else computer wise the entire show. very hard to believe. isnt there an article or video or something that shows how he plays his mashups live?

If you look further down in the thread, another guy (fpcookie) says that Girl Talk did the same thing in Melbourne.

yeah, pretty sure there's an MWTA that opened for him and saw a similar thing. just pressed play and messed around with the EQ.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on May-14-2009 14:48:

In the videos I've seen of him, he's nearly always bouncing around like a monkey on meth, so I guess it stands to reason that he couldn't be doing anything very involved on the computer.

Posted by flavdave on May-14-2009 15:09:

And DJs like Oakie that beatmatch track A and track B while fiddling with the EQ knobs are soooooo much better. I mean, they're actually doing something so it must be a better show.

Posted by ziptnf on May-14-2009 15:46:

I've never actually seen Girl Talk live so I didn't know he didn't actually DJ. That sucks, I thought he was like super skilled and did live mixing, kinda lame that all those mashups are pre-recorded.

i dont mind an ableton set as long as it sounds good. i do remember a vid that showed him scrolling through a list of names and dragging them to another area on the screen while the music was playing.

i think its good that djs put constant scrutiny on "live acts" and keep them under close watch to make sure the integrity is there, because it is important. but, i dont like it when something is considered a fact just because a couple of opening DJs said so. i want proof, not hearsay.

anyway, if really all he does is hit play on a 1 hour long mp3, then that wireless thing he does with his portable desk strapped to his waist and neck playing outside in the street/alley outside the venue is really really sad and fraudulent.

he uses cool edit, not ableton.

He uses AudioMulch, not Cool Edit. That's probably why these opening DJs thought he was playing a pre-recorded file, because the screen didn't look like Ableton or Serato. He must be a fake!

Posted by elFreak on May-14-2009 17:01:

we get it, you have a hard on for girl talk, relax and dut dut dut dut.

As long as it's not Windows Media Player or something equally as silly, it's okay. Pre-recorded shit would suck, hopefully he at least does something live besides dance around like a jackass.

Posted by elFreak on May-14-2009 17:31:

the best way is to go see for yourself.

you don't seem to be presented with many options here, and i suppose something is better than nothing.

I'll be sure to take off my tie dye shirt and cheer for Goa Gil anyways

Girl Talk if you want obnoxious hipsters, Oakey if you want washed-up trance crackers. Whoever wins, we lose.

when i opened for him he used cool edit (this was 2-3 years ago)

and yes, he pressed play, and then took his clothes off and put a pumpkin on his head and jumped into the crowd. i might even have a picture of the single stereo waveform gently chugging along.

he played here again a few months ago and this is from an interview with him:

http://cornellsun.com/section/arts/...l-talk-and-rock

quote:
Sun: Whats the difference between when youre making mixes for your shows and just recording?

G.G.: Both kind of influences each other. I mean, everything I do on stage is live, everything by hand, Ill go through 400 samples in real time. But I [do] have to prepare the arrangements beforehand. And a lot of it is [that] I like trying on new ideas at shows. And I even like doing new interpretations of previously existing albums. If people like this song or that song from an album, Ill try doing a remix in a new way ...

Sun: So do you change up the samples a lot? Do you craft it differently for every show?

G.G.: For a tour, theres usually a general base, but I like to prepare more material than I want to play so I can skip around a little bit if I feel like it. If I have time off, like this weekends shows are Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and this week I prepared some new material, so tonight versus last weekend, there might [only] be two new minutes or new material in there.I do that every week and it adds up ... Like theres some things Ill play tonight that Ill never play again.

I have a dilemma too, Gogol Bordello, for the third epic time, or Oakenfold?

Saw Max Tundra, he uses an ipod, plays a bunch of different, weird instruments, sings, and dances like a crazy monkey. Pretty entertaining. A GOOD way to use pre-recorded base.

Posted by julien2 on May-15-2009 04:11:

Gogol Bordello.

Seriously, guys, anything but Oakenfold.

Posted by junkproject on May-15-2009 04:12:

As bad as oakenfold mixing skill, i rather see him than what i saw and heard from those video of girl talk.

Pretty Lights is a great time, as is Girl Talk. I would not go to Oakenfold. I wish they had some good house or techno act. Sasha and Digweed were perfect.

dont miss nine inch nails either.
