Aden by far has the best prices, comparing to tons of stores. You might be able to price match them with Best Buy or Future Shop depending on who you talk to cause their excuse is that Aden has no return policy. My buddy just bought a 50D yesterday at the Future Shop downtown and was able to get the price match after a few minutes talking to the manager.

P.S. I got a Rebel XS body for sale if anyone is interested, 6 months old and LCD screen protector on it.

$100.00?

right?

RIGHT?

haha i try not to get into these petty arguments

yes it's my fault, i just confused both the D300 and D700.

But the rest is still true, Nikon is known for its flash system, while Canon is way ahead with its lense system. Nikon is always playing catch up to Canon with the bodies and has reduced the gap between both.

So to the original poster, if you plan to invest in lenses later, start with a great body like the 50D, to access the great lenses Canon has to offer.

I also have the Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L lense and its my favourite by far, but notice that you won't have a full frame with the 50D because of that 1.6 crop factor, in reality the lense becomes a 38-112mm which is way less intresting (the same applies to that D90 with its 1.5 crop factor).

If you plan on shooting landscape, a better choice is the 16-35mm F2.8 Lense, which becomes an intresting 25mm-56mm lense.

BTW you can find some good deals on used Canon 5D, those are heavy duty and are rated I believe to 80-100k easily, and are full frame.

You won't get video capture, but that seems non-essential to you.

Just as you listed your intentions, remember that unless you fully dedicate yourself to learning how to use your camera properly in full manual mode all the equipment in the world won't give you great photos. Take the time to read books: i recommend Understanding Exposure You'll learn a lot from this book. All you have to do is look at customer images from expensive lens on amazon to realize a lot of people have expensive gear and don't know how to use it. And for the recommendation, I recently saw someone selling a Canon 30D for $400 on Craigslist with 14000 actuations or something like that, a pretty good deal. With kids since you'll be doing handheld a lot, IS will definitely come in handy. If you've already got your mind made up you want to spend a lot on lens though, get something thats 18mm or even wider, because the 1.6 crop factor will make that 28.8mm giving you a decent wide angle, anything else and you won't be getting as close as you want.

totally agreed.

a used or lower tier dslr would do just fine in the situations that you need. lenses make more of a difference than the body. if you really have money to spend, get a 400-500 body and spend your $2000 on primes. in fact, get some L primes which are nice and fast. but again, if you have dough to spend, go for the big leauges.

ps. on the issue of canon vs nikon, i've been reading that alot of people, that includes a lot of professionals, are switching over to the dark side. apparently nikon has really stepped up it's game in terms of bodies and lenses.

Its all about how much you want to spend.

I am getting my first DSLR this summer and have pretty much made up my mind about the Canon T1i. Its around $1000 with a lense, good beginner camera, has the upgraded sensor and can shoot full HD video at 20fps.

Wired reviewed it against the Nikon and it came out ahead by a hair...they are pretty much the same in all areas. As someone said, both camps have their fanboys

Really a T1i? I read that it's like an over glorified XSI. Do you really need the video? Cause for a bit more you can get a 50D

it def. is. u'd rather be spending that extra $300 on a better or extra lens.

Posted by jackpea on May-20-2009 16:32:

meh, I dunno, a 50D would be at least $800-1000 more expensive with a lense...

...and at some point you have to ask yourself "Do I really need this?". For a beginner camera, I think the T1i should suffice. If I feel like I need it, I can always get something better down the line...
