Having a native UNIX terminal and commands is amazing for those of us that work on servers. Single biggest reason I want to try it out at home. I want to run traceroute dammit, not tracert! Putty is ok, but its slow compared to a native terminal.

True dat. My dlink dns-323 NAS started locking me out of files via windows at a UNIX level, so my man Schmucky used PUTTY to get at the file system at the unix command level. really cool--but yeah, slow.

yeah i totally didnt know osx was unix-based. my *nix skills are extremely rusty... i guess they are almost non-existent.

i need a good ftp client for osx 10.5.6. and recommendations? i use flashfxp in windows so i would like something similar.

my windows xp box just died. it sits at the POST screen and will not boot. all my pics are on there. any help would be appreciated.

I had no idea either until a couple of months ago, after some use.

A FTP client? No. I know Finder handles FTP natively like Explorer in windows. Otherwise I just use FireFTP with firefox. Its not amazing, but it gets the job done for when I'm testing FTP accounts.

OSX can read NTFS by default.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. Because you know, there won't be any driver issues that come up. Plus, switching old people this late in the game is bad idea.

Posted by chinamon on May-23-2009 22:47:

so i just installed photoshop cs2, aperture 2.0, picturesque, iwatermark.. everything works good.

i never though the following words would ever come out of my mouth but... i love mac.

I love how they have some how convinced users that Macs are not personal computers.

yeah i know. technically any computer you can use at home is a "personal computer".
and now that macs use intel it makes them even more a pc.

Dude, they're so much more than that! You can like organize your pictures and listen to music and stuff.

Funny you should make this post. I mad a major HD failure and was thinking about installing osx on my acer. thanks for the links and info

Posted by chinamon on May-26-2009 17:36:

so last night i decided to hook up speakers to my hackintosh to listen to music but thats when i realized my sound card was not working. i just assumed it worked because i installed the ALC889A kext during my osx86 install. tinkered around with it for a couple hours cuz i ran in to some problems. installed AppleHDA.kext with ALCinject.kext but that made my computer unbootable so i was freaking out because i thought i had to reinstall osx again. talked to some experts and found out it messed up my sata driver so i reinstalled that driver and had to tinker with my sata settings in the bios and then it booted again. finally installed VoodooHDA for my sound card and that worked so everything is finally working!

now i just need to hunt down a wifi card that is supported. at least LAN works.

You'll go back to Windows within a week, trust me

Been there done that, sometimes use OS X, but 95% of the time it's still 7.

no way. my other box is old and dying (running xp) and i was thinking about building a new box for windows but im thinking i might scratch that idea and stick with osx. i already got all the software i need on this thing and i love the feel of it.

any of you guys familiar with benchtest scores? i just tried benchtesting this box with geekbench and i got 2423 and i dont know if that is good or bad.

Hi. I got a hackintosh as well. Running a e6600 quad cpu + 8 gigs of ram. Using apogee duet and running logic 9. Got tired of cubase and windows after so many years. I get about 5165 geekbench score, sometimes a bit more. I am on mac osx 10.5.8 updated straight from apple..
