are you kidding !? the trains in NYC are horrible!

Nope, not kidding. The new E and L trains are much better than the pissy smelling hard clothe covered tube trains of london and the toasty warm paris metro trains. I'm talking about subway cars, not commuter trains.

I think DC still wins in that category. Rush hour has been a real bitch though ever since the Fort Totten crash.

nah - the interior of those trains is like BART in san francisco (probably the same model cars). The carpeting and covered seats collects odd odors and dirt (check the carpet next time you are on the train, it's ridiculously nasty - NYC subway cars can get a nice blasting of highly toxic chemicals unlike the carpets on the DC trains). Carpeting on subway trains is extremely nasty, some extremely dirty people ride public transit. Moreover, the layout is designed more for a commuter train with the dual front facing seats. Thus, people who have to stand are extremely uncomfortable.

On the other hand, the NYC subway cars don't have surfaces that trap odors, which allows for easy cleaning, and the layout is optimized for standing. The interior of the new cars (running on almost every line now, except the A and C, it seems) is pristine.
