Do you stand there and watch her take it every day? If not, that method requires far more trust than can reasonably be placed in the typical woman. Actually, it makes sense. We're talking about a specific kind of pill here. Under normal circumstances, you take a pill. But, given this context, and the fact that you know the hearer knows you're talking about a contraceptive pill, you change the article.

For example, if I ask you "Did you answer the phone?~ or ~Did you wash the car?~, I believe you (should) know what I'm talking about. So, if there's no possible ambiguity in our conversation, I can refer to a car as the car. It's the same phenomenon.
