It's just an expression, holy. Why read into it and make it about something it's not? This is exactly what's wrong with people these days: you can't even practice courtesy without someone making it a pc issue. Can someone not just excuse you and let that be it?? God, there's no sense of etiquette with people any more.

Told you to just say thank you instead of making this thread.

objectively its a bit odd, but i do have the impulse to say bless you

Well, a sneeze is a sign that the person may be sick or about to get sick. It's not really unusual, therefore, to wish the person well. Personally, I'm somewhat annoyed by the fact that you can't really say that when people cough, though the "cougher" often apologises for coughing in the middle of a conversation

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jul-23-2009 21:01:

Saying "bless you" is a bullshit arbitrary social convention, one I don't subscribe to. I don't say "bless you" when other people sneeze, I don't expect others to say "bless you" when I sneeze and I'm certainly not saying "thank you" if others do it.

If you feel compelled to say "bless you" then that's your decision, but you're not helping anyone or doing them a favour. Nobody says "bless you" when someone coughs, even though it's equally a sign of illness, so I don't buy this excuse that the phrase is an expression of concern. It's just something people say because they think they're supposed to. What a waste of time.

oh for fuck sake

if someone says "bless you" after i sneeze, even though i don't believe in religion, i say thank you.

have some damn manners and say thank you. saying thank you acknowledges their politeness more than it acknowledges god.

I believe politeness = expressing genuine gratitude, humbleness and warmth when I personally and honestly believe it is appropriate.

Arf. I love how you both went from morally outraged "God, have some fucken manners" to suddenly whimsical "Lighten up man" as soon as you realised you'd ran out of argument.

*ACHOO!*

"bless you"

"that offends me "

"what? sorry, i was just saying bless you because you sneezed "

"well you don't HAVE to say bless you to me just because you feel like it's some sort of natural order in society"

no i didn't run out of argument at all. i just think you give the whole "bless you" thing after sneezing a little too much thought. lol

It didn't take any thought at all, really. This whole area has pissed me off since I found out it was apparently rude to shake hands with your left. The idea that we're in 2009 and people get genuinely pissed off if you don't obey some pointless social code is baffling to me.

In future though, I'll remember not to think about things and just do as I'm told.

thank you is easy, its the whole internal dialog before that.

Posted by Banora on Jul-23-2009 23:27:

If someone says 'bless you' to me I usually just smile at them politely. If someone else sneezes I ignore it... I just don't want to comment on someone blowing snot out of their nose at high velocity.

I like how we here in Finland say "terveydeksi" when someone sneezes. It's basically just wishing good health for someone and as far as I know, has absolutely nothing to do with religion whatsoever.

Quite often I might say that to someone who happened to sneeze, but I rarely care if they thank me or not. Especially if it's someone I know well.
