I actually rather like Jay Leno's take on them, which I came across when he was featured on Top Gear last year:

quote:
James May: You know how the Toyota Prius is sort of like the _____ of Hollywood. Its a fashion statement.

Jay Leno: But, you know why. You see, because it has the moral superiority. With the Prius, you can go look, I am driving an unattractive car because I am saving the planet. See, in America were like, Everyone should know about the good work were doing anonymously.

Would you prefer that they were driving Hummers or F-150s like the 17sss? Or is it just the self-righteous attitude that irritates?

Personally, I would rather the bunch of self-satisfied wankers in reasonable sized cars.

fuck hybrids.

Not only is it their smug attitude, but the fact that they think they are helping just because they took this step, yet no other steps were taken to help. Like increasing funding for public transit and actually using public transit.

If a Prius driver get behind the wheel of one for a month, they'd never go back.

They wouldn't last a week. Their gas bill for 3 days would be higher than their gas bill for 2 weeks.

1000 people and no demand. People need to really fucking get a clue.

Until now, getting people to buy electric cars was like asking the hot chicks to date the retard. It just doesn't happen. People weren't, and in many ways still aren't, willing to give up their SUV or their gas engines. In the US anyways.

Trains do not start and stop like cars do, so the engine can operate a little differently.

I am all for teh Prius and any hybrid any car company makes. It creates a demand, which puts spending on R&D for these cars which will make them better. Baby Steps!

They do start and stop. I took the train every day for a year, and they start and stop just like cars do. They have no traffic though for the most part, so that isn't an issue.

wtf, they kick bums off of trains you drifter!

^^those kinda trains, not the BART!

Posted by SuspicionVandit on Jul-27-2009 04:35:

They turned their backs on us and I can't believe you lot are all just going to take it. 240, canceled. the XGR, canceled. the Supra, canceled. The NSX, canceled. The S2000, canceled. The Miata, gone. All to work on station wagons with back seats and stickers.
The sports car is going away like the vinyl, that thing you see on the weekend by an enthusiast who doesn't have his head up his own self-righteous butt who needs to have everyone notice his freshly polished iEnvironmentalist. Pour some motor oil down the drain in respect for the death of autophelia.

Lol, that's how I know his post is a pisstake.

The only people who drive Miatas are old, bald, aging, lonely men. Wearing baseball caps.

Nah, I rode the Amtrak style trains. Not BART. In fact, most of the locomotives for the MetroLink service are VERY similar to the freight train locomotives that BNSF uses typically.

Nah I know a bunch of young guys that do too. Then again, they race them.

The NSX and S2000 were unfortunate losses, sure, but I doubt they were very high on the chopping block line when it came to phasing out less eco friendly vehicles in favor of hybrids, as the S2000 was in the lower-higher end of the 'good' emissions spectrum, and with the NSX hardly being something in sufficient circulation to warrant discontinuing in light of the aforementioned green spirit.

I'm not sure what you're getting at with the Miata, as we all know it simply phased into the far, far more respectable MX-5, which is still in production (not that a name like 'Miata' doesn't connote intense automotive enthusiasm, or anything).

Can't say I was terribly upset about the 240 being discontinued in the US, as if history is any guide, the US would have continued to get shafted with more lifeless KA24 relatives right up until 2002.

By the way, we all know you're a Honda whore.

No they wouldn't, you fucktard. If you got behind the wheel of a reasonable sized car you'd realise how much more enjoyable they are to drive.

Back on topic, I found out the other day that up until circa 1920, electric cars were the most dominant transport type in America. It was only the greater range of combustion engines that made them more popular.

quote:
The Fisker-Karma is the first vehicle released by the Fisker-Automotive Company. The Karma features the Q-Drive technology and is powered by a innovative petrol engine/electric motors combination; Q-Drive is a series hybrid system meaning that the engine is mated with a generator to provide an electrical connection to the motors and also recharge the batteries and as such the electric motors are the only mechanical driving force connected to the wheels

I don't know in English but in French it's called "un royal", like the hamburgers in Mc Donalds (cf. Pulp Fiction).

Posted by bamski on Jul-27-2009 10:52:

Haha, awesome

I heard Amsterdam has forbidden tobacco in the shops, so if you buy hash, you'll have to 'settle' with bud as a mixer

edit: Sorry, wrong thread

On topic: that Fisker Karma is really awesome.

There is a kind of horrible compost instead, but if you don't put your cigarette pack on the table you can roll with a cig. But, you can do everything with the electric grinders they sell.

Let's turn this thread in the pothead alliance (after all, "un pot" in French = a muffler).

Clean diesel ftw.

Planning on getting an 09 Jetta TDI here in about 2 months.

Posted by nchs09 on Jul-27-2009 12:56:

If someone really wanted to get the most MPG out of a car, they would get a diesel and not a hybrid.
