So you are SOOOO right about that!
that first bit of PvD interview is right on
suffice to say it takes about going through 100 tunes to find one decent tune nowadays. where is the originality? where is the love of trance? frankly, I don't feel that in a lot of new productions. i hear a lot of producers trying to make a quick buck. probably the biggest reason why I stopped playing trance is that it's too much work to find one decent tune, and frankly it's taken the joy out of cratedigging for me.
trance needs more DJs who are willing to say that a lot of mainstream trance is shit, and willing to push their own sound. DJs who aren't afraid to play good stuff that their audience may not want to hear, or isn't the stuff that is the popular sound in trance
sadly, those DJs quickly fall off the popularity chart. but seems that a lot of big name DJs are indeed getting fed up with the cheese and willing to experiment more in their sets.
but still too many DJs playing crap, and too many people liking crap for me to take trance seriously

LOL is there anyone who doesnt that that trance was better back in the day? I thought I was going to have some harsh opposition in this thread!

Veronica, it was NUTS, just NUTS. I'd know every track in a set, EVERY one. When I didn't know we all flipped out trying to find out which remix, what white label, where I could buy/dl it. Ask Graham...(Yes he was into Trance back then too I think). |
i don't know...
still quite a bit of quality trance coming out.
i think the problem is that with the passing of time, people tend to evolve with their tastes. Doesn't happen to everyone. Years later despite me loving my house and techno, I still make it a point to keep up with the world of trance. I still enjoy it and granted I am a lot more picky nowdays, there is still enough good stuff coming out to keep a smile on my face.
Tom colontonio, Aly and Fila, callaghan, Tyas have all thrown out solid work over the last few years.
granted there is ALOT of crap out there but because there are so many bloody producers now, enough decent stuff does filter through to make the genre enjoyable.
the quality of trance has slowed down, I could go an entire month and only hear 2 tracks worth grabbing. There used to be something about it that made it so untouchable and amazing. This is not just going on with this scene, but others as well. Rock, Hip hop, rap etc..it's all flooded and saturated.

It's not just the music, "The Scene" or the people in "The Scene" changing. The biggest factor that causes you to change your taste in music is YOU.
The old tracks are good because they bring you back to that first rush of "WOW this is AMAZING". Remixing the classics every year takes that edge off, because you hear it every time you go out.
You're not going to get that same rush of adrenaline when you head down to the same club you've been to 200 times. You're not always going to have your heart leap into your throat when your favourite Dj plays your favourite song...mostly because you've been there, done that and bought the T-shirt. (Sometimes literally, lol)
I think that you (not you personally, Kel) have to take a step back, and look objectively on your life as a whole. You've changed, you're older, you want some bigger/different things.
I think the "Trance Baby Boomers" are getting older, and just want some different things now. The commercialism of Trance has taken it in a more mainstream direction, and now we're saturated with the stuff that we've been saturating ourselves since day 1.
Maybe its just a case of Too much, too often?

yankeeBaby: define what you think a good Trance song is maybe post examples maybe

| Originally posted by yankeeBaby well I agree and disagree here. I agree because clubbing certainly isnt my main priority anymore (as it was when I was 18-24 or so....). I also have to agree because the clubs here are WACK (ever since Roxy and Crobar shut down). I truly cant stand the clubs here, and while i love the fact that NYC gets such great talent brought in, the vibe is completely lost on me (probably because, to me, there ISNT much of a vibe at all!) But, as for just being over-saturated because of the length of time listening to the same genre: I dont necessarily think thats the case, in my world anyways. I can still appreciate a great track or a great night. Both still give me a rush on the occasion that it does occur (which is rare as of late, but possible. however, the style of trance is really whats pissing me off here. Its just such CRAP. Again, just my opinion, but I download sets and I kinda just half-pay-attention to them because they all sound the goddamn same! And on top of that, most of the sets are bland, bland and more bland. it like, please pass the salt and pepper, I need some spice back in my life!! |

| Originally posted by ChemEnhanced go listen to some trance from that time period....todays trance is all the same waterdown garbage. There are a few tracks that will still give me goose bumps.....and when that happens I know the track just gets to my soul. Trance music today sounds like it was just slapped together with some no name brand glue. Its not made to last...its made to get the quick buck before people start to like some other sound. Hip hop went the same way in the mid to late 90s. |
Doing stuff that is similar to this makes me not party at places like Guv or where there is 'trance' as I did before...
endless: are you saying that you hate djs making half assed attempts & butchering stuff or ou hate them using elements from other genres period
***** the best thing I can suggest is go on youtube and just look up some old tracks. Look at even older tracks from the early 90s. There is just so many good tracks from the early 90s as well. Just a few that I can think of are
Age of Love - Age of Love
Orbital - Halcyon On & On
Humate - Love Stimulation (Paul Van Dyk mix)
Balil - Parasight
Spicelab - Amorph
Dance 2 Trance - We Came in Peace
The Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea
Moby - Go
Art of Trance - Orange
Hallucinogen - LSD
Arpeggiators - Freedom of Expression
Red Planet - Star Dancer
Orbital - Chime
Legend B - Lost in Love
Hardfloor - Confuss
Thanks I appreciate it
Music has been shit lately ...house or trance...I find myself relistening to sets from years ago because those are the only ones that sound good compared to what comes out today.
Trance in general has gotten worse over the years. I got into EDM by listening to trance, and right now there is hardly anything I like at all. I find that it sounds too cheesy and all sounds the same, nothing new or interesting. The vocals sounds like they are sang pretty much by the same cracked out female voice in every track and are always about hopeless and lost love...and then comes a dramatic breakdown with hard beats after...so predictable!
Producers need to step it up!
I think it's all about being selective and going out there and downloading sets from Dj's you never listened to before or someone you never heard of and discovering amazing tracks like that
for me - Schulz is getting better and better month after month with his shows, his sets are exactly what I love about trance these days
I'm also excited to be checking out more house dj's
and actually going out and hearing them as well!
