I wear this with black dress shoes (minus the backpack!). In half a dozen interviews I scored offers in 100% of them...it has almost become my lucky interview outfit!

Posted by chimera66 on Aug-13-2009 04:14:

i don't think that outfit got you a job because a striped tie with a pinstriped suit imo looks bad.

as for me, well i've only been to two interviews in the last 3 years resulting to two jobs and wore two different suits. pant suits though, never worn a skirt suit to an interview but not sure why.

Posted by TranceOwnsLol on Aug-13-2009 04:37:

depends on what kind of job really. don't wear a suit if you're just applying for staff or something. just look smart, neat and unpretentious.

white shirt/really light shade of blue shirt
charcoal gray/gray pants
brown dress shoes
brown belt

you crazy, I wear em all the time.

You cannot go wrong with Navy suit, nice white shirt with red power tie!

So go to Macy's, the men's suit department always has a small sales rack. It usually only has a few suits, but if one fits, you got a $600+ suit for <$150. Then go to Kohl's, get teh shirt and tie...then you are set.

Oh and be prepared to answer the question of why you are a good fit for that position (ps...it has to do with how well you fit in with the company).

I love interviews

trust me. you'll thank me later.

Always wear a navy or charcoal suit with a white or muted coloured shirt. If you want to inject some personality with the tie then go ahead but no cartoon animals, words, or vulcans.

As a hireing professional I can assure you that if you don't dress in such a manner that I believe the impressing me is your number one priority then you're not getting the job.

Posted by Fledz on Aug-13-2009 13:39:

Always go conservative for an interview. Leave the accesories for when you've got the job. Dress smart but not fashion smart. Stick to neutral colours and like Moral said, you can inject a bit of colour with the tie but don't go overboard.

I forgot about this...my father used to work for a company and a local nutcase would apply for every job opening there. Each time he'd turn up in a different outfit or costume, they began to start calling him in just to see what he'd wear next.

Apparently he turned up once wearing a pirate costume riding a monkey bike!

No joke.

I am really picky about ties but the novelty ties like you mention make me want to vomit.

I'd go with dark color suit. (black, navy, grey)
and black shoes.

I got two suits right after college specifically for job interviews
(one I bought and the other my pops gifted me)

I dont' wear either of them now. Work attire is business casual. woot!

Dress to impress I always say ...

She's hired.

Loving the suggestions everybody. Good shit. Especially the pink nazi...dress, which would go perfectly in a sales environment.

Had an interview today for a personal banking position at Chase. Did pretty well. Could have done better, but it's all one big learning experience. If I don't get the job, the next interview will be that much easier.

Borrowed a blue shirt (relatively lighter blue) alongside black pants, black belt, black dress shoes. The jacket was a grey/brown color scheme...very classy, my great uncle used to wear it, and he was as successful as they come.

Hoping for the best...

whew...ok. lol i thought you were going to actually post in here about what to wear on an interview

Posted by malek on Aug-13-2009 23:59:

just don't wear white socks with that suit.

Posted by gtron on Aug-14-2009 00:48:

if i still did the whole interview thing i would add a little red or blue. prolly blue. it adds a little power and confidence to the mix.

Posted by occrider on Aug-14-2009 08:53:

Look in all seriousness, dress is the least of my concerns when hiring the person unless they totally fuck that aspect up. Just wear a regular traditional suit ... nobody is going to hire you based on fashion alone so there's no need to accessorize or shit like that.

Agreed, I got the job, and my outfit was nothing too fancy or audacious...something tells me they cared more for my energy, desire to work for the company, enthusiasm towards building customer confidence in the product and services at hand, etc., etc. You'd have to be a complete idiot to really fuck up the fashion aspect so much as to turn the interviewer off entirely before you even speak.

Blue was the way I went, and it worked. It definitely helped, too, that Chase's main colors are blue and black, which were the colors of my shirt and pants. My jacket was more of a greyish color, but it didn't matter, I won the job and the fashion that was involved in the interview either didn't matter or did the trick.

Ha! Actually the tie I wore was badass. Black with small white dots...sounds retarded in words, but it's a slick piece of apparel. My great aunt gave it to me after my great uncle passed away, she said it was expensive as hell.

Thank you! I appreciate it! I didn't have much going for me, but I guess my first impression was a good one.

Word out to those that feel they aren't qualified for what they want to do...this was a personal banking position at one of the country's largest banks. I don't have a finance degree, and although I have plenty of experience in retail, I have next to NONE in sales. Yet I got a job in a finance-related position in sales. Just smile, be confident. And the rest takes cares of itself.

Is that funny to you because you are dumb or is it because you are dumb?

you know why it's funny to me lol

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Aug-14-2009 23:45:

Why don't you tell everyone else.

Posted by Slylee on Aug-14-2009 23:48:

oh ok.

well, you see everyone, it's funny to me because hal here looks like a 19 year old emo kid who likes to sit home and rock out to marilyn manson with his non conformist hair style and possible eye makeup. and this thread is about what to wear on a job interview. so i mean, you probably wouldn't think a guy like hal would know what to wear on one. so when i saw that he was the last poster before i actually clicked the thread, for a split second, i thought, "omg, did hal actually give advice in this thread about what to wear on an invteriew?"

and then i came in and expressed my relief when i realized he posted something off topic, in an attempt to make some people laugh (aside from myself).
